The Oakville Soccer Club recog- nized 15 outstanding scholar ath- letes recently with its OSC Scholarship Luncheon at Glen Abbey Golf Club. The athletes all received an OSC Scholarship Award to help them pursue their studies at Canadian post-secondary institutions. All 15 athletes graduated from their respective high schools as honour students. Former Toronto Argonauts star Michael (Pinball) Clemons deliv- ered the leadership address before the awards were presented to the athletes. Following are brief bios about the 15 award winners: Sam Boyd has been an OSC member since 1998, served as a volunteer at Gala and Festival days, and has been a referee since 2005. The Abbey Park graduate will begin studying psychology at McGill University this fall. Lauren De Jong joined the OSC in 1996. A graduate of Kings Christian Collegiate, De Jong has served as a volunteer at Olive Branch Soup Kitchen. She will study kinesiology at McMaster University this year. Alexandra Edgar has been an OSC member since 1998 and played rep soccer for five years. The Holy Trinity grad was a clean- up coordinator for Earth Day for six years. She will study media, information and technoculture and business at Western University. Kenneth Edwards played with the OSC since 1997, refereed since 2004 and coached an indoor house league team in 2008. The St. Thomas Aquinas alumnus is off to the University of Waterloo to study chemical engineering. Jonathan Edwin has been an indoor/outdoor soccer player for more than 10 years, first joining the club in 1994. He coached an under-9 boys team this summer. Edwin, a graduate of Holy Trinity, is entering his final year at McMaster University, where he is studying biology and pharmacolo- gy. Brett Jong has been a mem- ber of the OSC since 1998, refereed two years for the club and was also a coach in the house league system. The White Oaks grad will study ani- mal biology at the University of Guelph this fall. Addie Matos joined the OSC in 1996 and played rep soccer for 10 years. Matos, an Iroquois Ridge graduate and Syl Apps volunteer, is studying electrical engineering at the University of Toronto. Taryn McKenna has been with the club since 1996, helped out with the clubs summer camps and was an assistant coach this past season. A graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas, McKenna is in her second year of studying religious studies at Dalhousie University. Stephen Missiuna won an Ontario Cup (2007) and South Region Soccer League Elite Division title (2010) during his time with the OSC, which he joined in 1998. The OT grad is studying engineering at the University of Toronto. Heather Novakowski, an OSC member since 1997, served as a volunteer with the clubs Gala days, registration and academy. She is also an animal care volunteer with the Oakville and Milton Humane Society. The Loyola grad is off to the University of Guelph to study science/wildlife biology. ? Corinne Smith has been with the OSC since 1995. She helped out with the clubs Festival and regis- tration days as well as coaching an indoor team. Smith, a graduate of Abbey Park, is in her second year of studying biological science at the University of Guelph. Laura Spagnuolo joined the OSC in 1997. She coached an indoor house league team in 2007- 08. The St. Thomas Aquinas grad will study life science at the University of Toronto. Sarah Syer has been a mem- ber of the OSC since 1996. Syer, who served as a member of Loyola student athletic council, will study biomedical sciences at the University of Guelph. Brett Swinarton joined the OSC in 1999 and refereed games for the club from 2006-07. The Iroquois Ridge grad ranked in the top 10 national percentile in the University of Waterloo math con- test and will study business admin- istration at Wilfrid Laurier University. Emma Mangliardi, a member of the club since 1998, received the OSCs James Baillie Memorial Award. She was a rep player for five years and also refereed from 2004-07. The Oakville native, who con- cluded hs Ontario Hockey League career last season with the Niagara Ice Dogs, has signed a standard contract with the Ontario Reign. The Reign, the minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, plays out of Ontario, California. Traccitto, 21, was an alternate captain with the Ice Dogs last sea- son as an overager. He led all OHL defencemen in goals with a career- high 20, adding 18 assists and 95 penalty minutes in 65 games. The Reign competes in the ECHL (formerly the East Coast Hockey League).
