The award, which is named for former Oakville Chamber of Commerce Chair Nelson Cusitar, recognizes an individual for his or her outstanding contribution to the Oakville business community over an extended period of time. Oakville Chamber of Commerce President John Sawyer said it wasnt long before the name Len Sanci came up. Sanci, chair of Oak-Land Ford Lincoln Sales Ltd., has been making contributions to Oakvilles business community for the last 40 years. Even so, following that chamber luncheon, he was only one of 18 names being considered until the wider business community was asked for its opinion. Members of the board went out and talked to their business contacts in the community, people whod been doing business a long time, and Lens name came up repeatedly, said Sawyer. The reasons were the length of time hes been doing business in the community, his reputation and pro- file within the community and, its not a criteria, but people also kept referring to his community service. In the face of all this feedback Sawyer said Sanci really was the log- ical choice. An announcement was made in August that Sanci would receive the award at the Oakville Chamber of Commerces 56th Annual Chairs Dinner on Sept. 22. Im very pleased with this, very very pleased, said Sanci. Im pleased that Ive had the opportunity to represent the Ford motor company for the past 40 years in Oakville and its led to some won- derful opportunities. Its an honour to be recognized with this award. Sanci began his career in the automotive sales industry when he was still in his teens, getting a sales job at his brother Bills used car lot in Toronto. I just loved being there with the technicians and the sales people, said Sanci. The love for cars was there and repairing cars, selling cars, making customers and watching the business grow was a wonderful joy. This love of cars stayed with Sanci as he took on sales jobs at a Chevrolet dealership and later a Pontiac dealer- ship, both in Toronto. In 1964 he took on his first man- agement job at a Ford dealership in Toronto becoming the general man- ager of that dealership by 1970. In Jan. 1, 1970 Sanci arrived in Oakville taking over the Oak-Land Ford dealership, which continues to operate on Trafalgar Road today. Sanci said having his own busi- ness in Oakville provided him with opportunities to do many things with his interest in the automobile busi- ness leading him to join the Toronto Automobile Dealers Association. He would serve as the president of the Toronto Automobile Dealers Association in 1983. He would also serve as the president of the Toronto International Autoshow in 1984. Sanci has also served on the Ontario Automobile Dealer Association Board where he spent two years as chair of the government relations committee. He has also spent 25 years as a member of the Lions Club and served as president of the organiza- tion. Sanci was also the second presi- dent of Junior Achievement in Oakville, which helps young people to create their own businesses. Oak-Land Ford has been the principal sponsor of the Oakville Hospital Foundations annual 5K run 3K walk for the past 15 years. Sanci has passed his legacy on with his son David taking over as president of Oak-Land Ford Lincoln Sales Ltd., about seven years ago. Im proud to say its a family business, he said. Theres nothing I would like more than to someday see one of my grandchildren involved in the business. Sanci said his time in Oakville has been positive, stating he has enjoyed watching Oakville grow from a town with a population of 45,000 to its current population of 170,000. Its been a wonderful experience for me. It was a great business opportunity and it turned out to be just a superb experience to be here, he said. Watching the town grow and watching Ford grow and watch- ing the dealership grow has just been a wonderful experience. Sanci is married to Marilyn Sanci with whom he will be celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary in September. He also has two children and three grandchildren. The dinner, where Sanci will receive his award, is at the Oakville Conference Centre, located at 2515 Wyecroft Rd. A networking reception and silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with the gala dinner taking place at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $125 per person and $875 for a table of eight. The Former Chief of Defence Staff General Rick Hillier will be the keynote speaker at this event. For tickets, contact Nesrene Salem at the chamber, at 905-845- 6613, ext. 28, e-mail nesrene@oakvil- lechamber.com or visit www.oakvil- lechamber.com/presidents-dinner- business-networking.aspx.
