Cross one more item off James Hinchcliffes to-do list. The local race car driver earned his first victory on an oval circuit last week- end, winning the Chicagoland 100 in Joilet, Illinois. Hinchcliffe edged out Great Britains Pippa Mann in the third-closest finish in Firestone Indy Lights Series history, pre- vailing by 0.0159 seconds at the end of the 67-lap race. Hinchcliffe began the race in 13th position after a fuel pump issue cost the 23-year-old in qualifying. The Oakville Trafalgar grad moved into the top 10 after the first lap around the one- and-a-half-mile track. In the final caution period, Hinchcliffe passed title rival J.K. Vernay of France and rode strong momentum on the out- side of the final turn to barely beat out Mann. I have to say a huge thanks to my team for this one, said Hinchcliffe. They worked furiously to sort the fuel pump issue after qualifying as we knew, aside from that, we had a great car. It was definitely a team effort and its great to get the win checked off on an oval track. The Chicagoland 100 was the 11th event of the 13-round Firestone Indy Lights Series. Hinchcliffe has two other series wins this season, claiming the checkered flag at Long Beach (a street circuit) and Edmonton (a temporary road course circuit). Hinchcliffe currently sits second in the points standings with 391 points, trailing Vernay by 53 points for top spot. The series continues this weekend with the Kentucky 100. 33 W ednesday , Septem ber 1, 2010 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m 406 SPEERS RD., OAKVILLE ACROSS FROM RONA LANSING 905-337-2066 w w w. c o b b l e s t o n e m b e rs . c a MASONRY & FIREPLACE DESIGN SPECIALISTS LABOUR DAY WEEKEND SALE! The Minor Oaks Hockey Association product was traded last week from the Moncton Wildcats to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, the fourth Quebec Major Junior Hockey League club Metcalfe will suit up for in the past three years. The 6-foot, 196-pound overage defence- man has scored one goal, added seven assists and racked up 239 penalty minutes in 186 career QMJHL games. Metcalfe competed in the Memorial Cup last year with Moncton after being traded during the season from the Halifax Mooseheads. I think hes going to bring a bit of expe- rience to our young crew, Cape Breton gen- eral manager Mario Durocher told the Cape Breton Post. And I think hes going to bring some toughness, too. Hes one of the best fighters in the league. Hes going to be able to protect our youngest guys. Metcalfe first came into the QMJHL in 2008-09 with the Gatineau Olympiques.
