The centre, located inside the Sheridan College campus in Oakville, opened in 2003. It provides an envi- ronment for conducting applied research into areas of practical concern and relevance to older Canadians. In working towards enhancing the lives of Canadian seniors, the centre works with older adults from the communi- ty, who participate in research and in the direction of the centre. The funding will be spread out over a five year period. It came to the centre through the College and Community Innovation program, an initiative of the federal govern- ment. In nations around the world, older adults are the fastest-growing age group, and Canada is no exception, said Pat Spadafora, principal investigator and proj- ect director at the centre, in a press release. By 2031, adults aged 65 and older will com- prise nearly 21 per cent of all Ontarians, and 23-25 per cent of all Canadians. While we celebrate the success of longevity, we must also respond to the chal- lenges of providing appro- priate care and support to older adults. The centre will focus on its project titled Aging in Place: Optimizing Health Outcomes through Technology, Design and Social Innovation. The project will include the centre collaborating with small and medium- sized companies in research and design of technology applications that promote cognitive health and social inclusion. The partners will work with Sheridans researchers, faculty members and students. The partners include: Acclaim Health and Community Care Services, Cerebral Vortex, Pigeon Branding + Design, PointerWare Innovations, Posit Science Corporation, Recreational Respite, the Region of Halton, Retire-at-Home, Schlegel Seniors Villages and Symetric Productions.
