how right my elementary school teachers were. Dont get me wrong, I always paid attention in class, but I never thought that what they said about high school was completely true. However, every single day of high school includes something they either told/ warned me about. For example, I was cautioned about a different level of work load, and every single week for the past three weeks Ive had at least one test. I was also told the classes move very quickly, and surely enough Ive already been through two units in sci- ence class. The list goes on and on, but it just goes to show that you should take your teachers advice (and prepare yourself) because they really are telling you these things because they care and not just so they have some- thing to say. My situation in high school was a little different than others because I made the last minute decision to go to a Christian school in Oakville rather than the one my friends were going to. If that grip were gone, you would feel off balance and nothing would be quite the same; the thing Im referring to now is change. You cant stop change; it always manages to squirm into all of our lives whether we want it to or not. Lets admit it, we dont always invite change with a warm welcome, now do we? But Ive recently realized that change even as annoy- ing and hard as it is can be a good thing. This past June was a very big milestone in my life, as it marked my graduation from elementary school and the progression into high school. I was really nervous at first about several things (getting lost, not liking my teachers) but I was lucky enough to realize that everyone was in the exact same boat; I wasnt the only new person who didnt know anyone, and that made my transition a lot easier. The first two weeks were not necessarily happy ones for me considering I wished I was at the same high school as all of my friends, but now that Im settled in a lot more, its harder and harder to say that going there was a mistake. Everyones scared of new situations, but Ive learned that when you leave a little bit of openness in your heart, these new situations can become the most comfortable ones youve ever dealt with. Something thats been especially interesting is seeing Change can be good whether we like it or not However, in my case I was fortunate enough to keep many friends, and Ive gained a lot of new ones as well. In conclusion, high school in a lot of ways is everything people tell you it is. You still get drama and rumours and yes its hard to adapt, but one day youll look back and realize that this thing we call change, was really the foothold pushing you through everything. Quilts for Charlie Fund On Saturday, Oct. 23, The Charlie Fund of the Oakville & Milton Humane Society will celebrate its 25th anniversary of providing emergency veterinary care to ill and injured homeless animals by hosting a Quilt Show and Auction at Maple Grove United Church. The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will include the quilt show, silent auction, crafts and pet-related attractions. Admission is $2 and all proceeds go to the fund. The Charlie Fund was formed in 1985 in response to the need for a fund specifically designated to emergency veteri- nary care for homeless animals in care of the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. Named for a spirited border collie named Charlie who had an overwhelming leg injury which resulted in amputa- tion and who was later adopted, The Charlie Fund has helped many animals who might not otherwise have gone on to live happy lives with forever families.
