This is a sobering reality and yet these statistics also show that thou- sands of women are beating it. As cancer researchers struggle with caus- es, prevention, and better treatments, the importance of early detection can't be over emphasized, says Dr. Doug Tkachuk at Lifelabs, a leading diagnostic centre. Indeed, all the avid annual awareness campaigns may be a big part of the reason why breast cancer death rates have declined in every age group since the mid-90s. Many factors can impact a woman's risk of getting breast cancerincluding age, family history, menstruation patterns and hormone replacement therapybut it's worth noting that approximately 70 per cent of breast can- cer patients report having no risk factors at all. If breast cancer is found and treated before spreading, there is a far better chance that it can be successfully removed, adds Dr. Tkachuk. It is important therefore to take an active role in your personal breast-screening regimen. LifeLabs recommends the following pri- mary options: Self-Exam: Become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel so you become aware if changes occur. While self- exams are very important they should not replace your clinical breast exams, or mam- mograms. Clinical Exam: Women are advised to get a professional breast exam at least every two years as part of a regular health check up. Mammography Exam:A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray of the breast and is done in a clinic or screening centre. Your doctor will advise the right time and frequency for this, but generally, mammograms are recom- mended every two years once women reach age 50. By 70 years of age, ask your doctor how often you should be tested for breast cancer.
