Christian Christou, Mother Teresa Strong turnout at Catholic meet Nearly a quarter of eligible students participated in the Halton Catholic District School Boards elementary cross-country championships recently at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The meet drew 2,395 runners from across the region. Twenty-seven heats were held as rainy condi- tions didnt drown out the excitement of the day. Pope John Paul II had the highest overall participa- tion rate of all Catholic schools, with 52 per cent of its students competing. That strong turnout earned Pope John Paul II the Cynthia Tobin HCDSB Cross-Country Overall Participation Award, a trophy in honour of Tobins 30- plus year assistance with the elementary championship meet. Two other Oakville schools, St. Joan of Arc and St. John, ranked second and third in participation rate, respectively. Two heats saw a local school sweep the podium. Mother Teresas Dylan Jackson, Ty Jackson and Sam Ritchie finished 1-2-3 in the mite boys Division B race, while St. Matthews Kristen ONeill, Vanessa Corbett and Lexi Noden matched the feat in the bantam girls Division C heat. St. Marguerite dYouville student Meghan Segeren finished third in the midget girls Division B race, the fifth straight year she earned bronze or better. Full results from the meet were not released until last week. Local top-three finishers in each heat are listed below. HCDSB CROSS-COUNTRYRESULTS ENJOYING THE HEAT: Our Lady of Peace student Derek McVey was one of many local run- ners to win heats at the Halton Catholic District School Boards elementary cross- country champi- onships recently at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. McVey won the atom boys Division B race.
