Mayor Rob Burton presented the award to council on Oct. 4 and thanked Oakville residents for their nomination. This award recognizes the hard work our council, historical societies and citi- zens have put into ensuring Oakvilles his- tory is well preserved, Burton said. It also tells us that we are moving in the right direction when it comes to heritage preservation. The Prince of Wales Prize is awarded to a municipality that demonstrates a strong and sustained commitment to the conser- vation of its history. Lifelong resident and heritage volun- teer Barbara Savage nominated the Town of Oakville for this prestigious award with 22 Oakville residents also lending their support for the nomination. The Town of Oakville began its heritage preservation more than 60 years ago. In 1948, Oakville designated its first heritage building and developed a plaquing pro- gram in 1957. The Town of Oakvilles 1962 Official Plan incorporated heritage policies that helped ensure more than 90 per cent of Oakvilles historic buildings continue to exist today. In 1976, the Municipal Heritage Planning Committee was estab- lished. Oakville was the first municipality in Ontario to establish a heritage conserva- tion district in an urban context (Old Oakville designated in 1983), and to oversee the addition of two more districts, with two more in the works for designa- tion in the next couple of years. Most recently, Oakville Council added more than 350 properties to the Oakville Heritage Register that protects them under the Ontario Heritage Act. That is in addition to more than 500 designated properties. In February 2010, the Ontario Heritage Trust awarded The Town of Oakville with the Lieutenant Governors Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership with a population over 150,000. In September 2010, Oakville Council passed a notice of intention to designate its first tree, a 250-year-old her- itage tree the Great White Oak, on Bronte Road.
