THE DEATH OF JUDGE GORHAM
Was County Judge of Halton for
Nearly Twelve Years
IMPOSING FUNERAL ON TUESDAY
Thomas Ambrose Gorham, County Judge of this county, died at his home at Milton Saturday morning. He had been suffering from a malignant growth, carcinoma, since last December. In April he was compelled to ask for six months' leave of absence, when Deputy Judge Elliott was appointed, but he was unable to leave home. His age was fifty-eight. He was called to the bar in 1882.
He was born at Newmarket. After completing his legal course with the firm of Mowat, Downey & Langton, Toronto, he went to Winnipeg, where he was claims agent for the C.P.R. for three or four years, after which he went to Port Arthur where he had a large practice and was appointed Crown Attorney. He resigned that position when he was appointed Judge for Halton, came to Milton and took his oath of office on December 6, 1901. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, aged about seven, also by his mother, who lived with him, a brother at Port Arthur, and a sister at Chicago.
His Honor Judge Gorham came of long and honorable ancestry, both near and remote. It is asserted that the Gorhams are entitled to claim descent from a progenitor who accompanied William of Normandy to England in 1066, and there can be no doubt as to the fact that the Gorhams of America are descendants from James Gorham who came over on the Mayflower in 1620.
In his private life as well as on the bench, Judge Gorham was highly respected. He was of a quiet and gentlemanly disposition. In Milton he took a quiet but effective interest in social matters and in the industrial prosperity of the town. He was an earnest worker in the Presbyterian Church.
The funeral on Tuesday afternoon was very largely attended.
The services were conducted by Rev. E. F. Smith, B.A., of Hensall, formerly of Milton, and Rev. Mr. Cooke, of Grace Church.
The pall bearers were chosen from the legal fraternity of the county; Deputy Judge Elliott, Crown Attorney Dick, Victor Chisholm, Milton, A. J. Mackinnon, Acton, E. H.Cleaver, Burlington, and Alex. Chisholm, Oakville.
