- THE LATE JOHN B. CHISHOLM.
A Native of Halton and Resident of
the County for eighty Years.
John Brant Chisholm, whose sudden death from heart failure, on Monday of last week, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Alex. Ramshaw, Guelph Street, was born on Burlington Plains in August, 1829. He was the son of the late Col. John Chisholm. In 1849 he married Mary Craddock, of Walpole.
Mr. Chisholm was Clerk of the Court and Bailiff at Burlington for fourteen years, but resigned his office and came to this vicinity to engage in farming. In 1869 he moved to lot 1, con. 3, Erin, at present occupied by Mr. Fred Ryder, but belonging to the Chisholm estate.
Mr. and Mrs. Chisholm retired from the farm fifteen years ago, and took up their residence in Acton. Mrs. Chisholm pre-deceased him about four years ago. Ten children were born into their home - three sons and seven daughters, of whom the following survive: Mrs. George Dills, Mrs. John Denny, Mrs. Hiram Swackhamer, and Mrs. Alex. Ramshaw, Acton; John and Thomas, of Saginaw, Mich; Mrs. Ronald Johnston, of Johnstown, N.Y., and Mrs. Fred E. Ryder, of Brockville, all of whom were present at the funeral last Thursday except Mrs. Fred Ryder, of Brockville, who was detained at home through illness. Mrs. Chisholm had twenty-eight grandchildren living and six great-grand-children. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. C. Wilson, assisted by Rev. G. W. Barker. The pall bearers were two sons, Messrs. John and Thomas; two sons-in-law, Messrs. Ronald Johnson, Fred Ryder, and two grandsons, Messrs. Brant Swackhamer and Clifford Ramshaw.
Mr. Chisholm was an ardent Conservative and a member of the Church of England. In fact his education was directed by his father, the late Col. Chisholm, with a view to his taking holy orders in that church. - Featured Link
