Death of Rev. J. E. Howell, M.A.
Many hearts in Acton were saddened last Saturday when the news reached town of the death the day before, in the parsonage at Hanover, of Rev. J. E. Howell, M.A. Mr. Howell was in good health two or three weeks before, when his daughter Miss Lucie was married, and his illness was of rather brief duration. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Belleville, the old home. Mr. Howell, was the pastor of the Methodist Church here for three years - 1894-96 - and has always been held in loving remembrance by the congregation. So popular and successful was he here that he was paid, during the whole of his pastorate, the highest salary ever paid by the Methodist Church, Acton. Twice last year he was called from Hanover to officiate at the burial of members of the congregation here. Mr. Howell was born in Prince Edward County, near Belleville, on August 1st, 1835. He graduated from Victoria University in 1863 and taught for a year in Albert University, Belleville. He entered the ministry in 1864 and was just closing his fortieth year of service for God. His ministry throughout was evangelistic and was marked by the ingathering of hundreds of converts. He was elected President of the Guelph Conference in 1889, and was sent to General Conference at four of its quadrennial sessions. Mrs. Howell, who is in much better health that when they were stationed in Acton, survives, with two sons and three daughters. Genuine sympathy will be extended them by their numerous friends in Acton.
