Lieut.-Col. Campbell Died While
Visiting His Brother in
Wisconsin.
LARGE FUNERAL ON MONDAY.
Lieut.-Col. Donald Campbell, Registrar for this county, accompanied by Mrs. Campbell and his little daughter, went to Jefferson, Wisconsin to visit his brother, James, on the Western Excursion on the 1st inst. He looked as well as usual when he left Milton, but last Thursday morning a telegram was received stating that he had died the day before. The cause of his death was heart disease.
Col. Campbell was born in the township of Nelson, in 1839. His father, a typical Argyleshire man, named Archibald Campbell, arrived in Canada in 1820, and was one of the pioneer settlers of Halton County. Deceased was a man of splendid physique and military bearing. He stood more than six feet in height, and was a magnificent specimen of a Canadian Highlander. He was proud of the country of his birth and equally proud of that of his ancestors. He was identified with several Scottish societies, but for some years past the Sons of Scotland Benevolent Association claimed his attention in an especial manner. Last year he was Grand Chief of the order. He was one of the most prominent agriculturalists of that township. He was equally prominent in politics, an active worker in the Liberal ranks and an effective speaker. When No. 5 Co. of the 20th Batt. Lorne Rifles was organized, shortly before the Fenian raid, he was gazetted as its first lieutenant and qualified for his duties by taking a course of instruction in the Military School at Toronto, in connection with the 47th regiment of the Imperial service, receiving a first-class certificate. On the organization of the Halton regiment of Reserve Militia he was gazetted as its commanding officer and resigned his commission in the 20th Batt.
In 1880 he was married to Mary J. McComb, of London township, and to them one daughter was born. In the affairs of the country he ever allowed a deep interest. In recognition of such services, he was appointed in 1889 by the Mowat Administration to the Registrar of Deeds for Halton, as successor to the late Francis Barclay.
The funeral on Monday was very largely attended by sympathizing friends not only from the locality of his late residence, but from all parts of the county and from the cities of Toronto and Hamilton. The friends met at his late residence in Nelson at noon. The services at the house were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Abraham, of Burlington, and were most solemn and impressive. The Rev. Mr. Abraham was assisted at the grave by the Rev. Mr. Mahaffy, of Milton.
The funeral was under the auspices of St. Clair Lodge No. 135, G.R.C.A.F. and A.M. of which deceased was a worthy member. Worthy Master Dr. McCrimmon was assisted by Worthy Bro. Hoodless, of Hamilton. There was a large turnout of the members of the lodge, and also a goodly number of visiting brethren. The pall-bearers were Messrs. J. J. Hoodless, Dr. Robertson, J. H. McCollom, J. A. Frazer. J. T. Elliott, C. Hoff. The Sons of Scotland, of Campbell Camp, which camp was named after the deceased brother, were largely represented in the procession.
In the large assemblage were noticed the following prominent men: - From Hamilton, Mr. J. J. Hoodless, Dr. Russel; from Toronto, Justice Wingfield, Dr. Wyley, grand medical examiner, and Capt. D. M. Robertson, grand secretary, Sons of Scotland; from Georgetown, Messrs. William McLeod, J. R. Barber, L. Grant, J. G. Harley; from Acton, Lieut.-Col. Allen, Mr. John Warren, ex-warden, D.
