FATAL BRIDGE ACCIDENT
By Which one of Acton's Finest Young Men is
Suddenly Launched Into Eternity.
Last Thursday morning while a gang of workmen were engaged building the iron work of the Watterworth bridge, about six miles from Glencoe and between the counties of Middlesex and Elgin, a temporary bridge on which the men were at work laying the heavy iron stringers gave way and all were precipitated into the river. In falling a heavy timber struck Mr. James Lamb, of Acton, who was foreman of the gang employed by the Hamilton Bridge Company, by which he was killed instantly. Alex. Watterworth, son of Joseph Watterworth of Mosa, was killed also. The others injured are Daniel Mills, of Mosa, hand and leg badly crushed; Hiram Lumbley, of Mosa, badly hurt about the shoulders; J. W. Madigan, of Hamilton, hand crushed and leg hurt; and R. Campbell of Komoka, legs bruised and wrist sprained. Watterworth's body was found after about five hours search pinned beneath the debris. One of the injured men died on Saturday.
Immediately upon hearing of the accident Messrs. Albert and Michael Lamb, brother and uncle of the deceased, left here for the scene of the accident. They returned with the remains on Friday evening. The back part of the head was very badly crushed while other parts of the body were bruised and scratched.
The unfortunate young man was the eldest son of Mr. Patrick Lamb of this place. He was thirty years of age, was more than ordinarily intelligent, was possessed of a good education and was esteemed and respected by all who knew him. He left home some four or five years ago and has since occupied responsible positions in Toronto and Hamilton. His untimely end is much regretted by the entire community.
The funeral on Saturday was very largely attended. Services were held in St. Joseph's church, presided over by Father Kiley, and interment took place at the R. C. Cemetery.- Featured Link
