Thursday, January 12, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL 3 Mrs. Breita Wick, mother of Ken Wick who was seriously injured in a car accident near Dorion this fall, escaped serious injury herself Saturday morning when her car went out of control as she was entering the Nipigon cutoff off highway 17. Her daughter Sharon, 21 and son Larry, 10 were in the car with her at the time. No one was hurt. CAMERON FALLS CALLING by Marion Lake This week in Cameron the nominations and elections for the annual vacancy in the Mutual Benefit Committee were held. Although there was only one seat to be filled, the nominations turned out to be as exciting as the election was unpredictable. Four men and for the first time, two women offered themselves as candidates. Running were Eleanor Leece, Mary McKinnon, Lome Corlette, Chuck Hudson, George Grant and Allan Holiday. Having two women offer themselves as candidates came as somewhat of a surprise but pre-election predictions were in their favor. It seemed to be the general feeling that a women’s voice on the committee would benefit both the colony and the committeeâ€"and that the women would rise to support their kind. But predictions come and go and when the ballots were collected and counted the laurel wreath went to Allan Holiday, our personable teacher from the Yukon. And they couldn’t have elected a better man Congratulations Allan and good luck. Perhaps next year if given another chance, the women will see out of the other side' of their coffee cups - who knows. Cameron folk along with their neighbors from Nipigon and Red Rock gathered in the community hall New Year’s Eve to see the old year out and welcome the new one in with their usual exuberance. The hall wasn’t as crowded as in former years we are told but those who were there will probably agree that "a good time was had by all”. And now, just aside to the ladies, we noticed Jamette Denford in an eye-catching black and white frock, Alfreda Hansen in a softly pleated spring green chiffon, Reggie Potvin in dainty white and leaf green creation (foreign import we hear), June Bishop in a smart frock of pale orchid (nice choice Lloyd) and Irene Hudson in in gay redâ€"among many other dresses most of which were a little difficult to pin-point. The smoke and paper streamers you know! In below zero blizzard conditions, the Cameron Falls junior and senior Rangers met their counterparts in the Red Rock hockey teams on Saturday in Cameron Falls. Judging from the cheers audible even up on the hill, the weather was completely ignored. Red Rock came out on top in both games with the junior score reading 8-1 in their favor. The senior Rangers lost 7-4 despite the excellent goaltending of Glen Bishop who is still nursing two black eyes caused by a high-flying puck in a practise session last week. Teams are coached by Pat Jones and Lome Corlette. Referees were David Whittle, Chuck Hudson and Tommy Boyle. We weren’t able to get the high singles and triples for this week in the bowling scores but here are the team standings: In first place Mervin Enders’ team with 56 points, second: Penti Rintala’s team with 55 points, third: Anne Bylund’s team with 51, fourth: Tommy Boyle’s team with 50 points, fifth: Andy Davidson’s team with 46 points, sixth: Pat Jone’s team with 37 points, seventh: Joe Campbell’s team with 36 points and eighth: Be a Keown’s team with 33 points. We hope we, can get the high singles and triples next week. Our own Bea Keown looked as though she was set to break the world’s record before Christmas. It is rumored she may even give up her amateur standing to turn 'pro’. Wright scores again! Pybus’s are proud owners of a new sky blue Valiant. Remember the W.A. meeting Monday, Jan. 16, at Jane Haig’s, Cameron mens’ bon-s pi el Jan. 27, Hospital Auxiliary Meeting Monday, Jan. 30 at June Bishop’s and Nipigon, Red Rock, Cameron Hospital Auxiliaries combined tea and bake sale at the Elks’ Hall in Nipigon on Jan. 1-21. WHAT'S YOUR BEEF? This is not a harsh letter but I do have a beef and I would like it answered. For two days during the Christmas weekend and again for another two days during the New Year’s weekend, the post office in Nipigon was closed tight and no mail was even sorted. Now I realize that everyone must have their holiday just the same as I but is this necessary? Couldn’t the mail have at least been put in the boxes even if the wicket was not open for 48 hours? This is a government service and I feel we deserve better service than this. Goodness knows, the post office is closed enough during the week as it is without extra time at holiday too. I hope this 'beef’ does some good as I have heard so many people complain about the same thing. I was waiting for the editor to take it up but could wait no longer.
