Little, batcher, Hanover, killed and dressed a calf thirteen weeks old that weighed 400 lbs. Frederick Mann, the murderer of the Cook family was hanged at L'Ori* ginal, on the 12th October. The Mt.Forest Advocate fovours the numbering of houses in that town, also the enlarging of their Town Hall. Mr. Samuel Bobinson has present- ed the English church, Clarksburg, with a handsome marble baptismal font. A by-law was carried last week in Mettford, by fifteen majority, to pro- vide means for purchasing a steam fire engine. The Shelbume Free Prets is to be run by a jomt stock Company in fu- ture. We shall uow expect to see an improvement in the paper. Mr. E. Wragge, late manager of the T. G. B. Eailway.entered upon the duties of bis new ^ituatiou, on Thursday last, viz manager of the Western division of the G. T. E. Depabtuee. â€" Bev. Mr. Turnball is about to take his departure from Shel- bume to labour in another parish. Before leaving he was presented with a purse of money and an address. Mr. Chas. McConnell is a successful hunter. On Tuesday last he shot a very large otter measuring three feet six inches. The skin when stretched measured four feet ten inches. â€" Dun~ dalk Herala. Dkad. â€" Mr.D, J. Macdonald, a con- tractor well known in these parts, and for some tin»e a resident of Colling- wood, is dead. The deceased gentle- man built most of the H. N. W. E. B., and helped to build the T. G. B., and many railroads in Ontario. â€" Col- lingwood Enterprise. A sad death, supposed to be the effect of drink, oceured last week at Homing's Mills. A man named Craw- ford was found lying dead near the sidewalk on the morning of the 1st., inst. He has been drinking heavily and as he is without relatives or friends was buried as quickly as possible. It is said that a sum of $5 was due him, and for this amount, some one under- took to furnish a rough coffin and perform the duties of sexton. FiBK. â€" The barns of Mr. Morrison, 9th con. Derby, were totally consumed by fire on Wednesday the 9th. Mr. Morrison was threshing on that day and the fire spread so rapidly that the machine owned by Mr. Thomas LesUe was also burned with the other con- tents of the barn. The loss to Mor- rison is heavy as he lost his whole season's crop, and Mr. Leslie's loss is also a senona one. The origin of the lire is not exactly known, but is supposed to be the result of careless- ness. â€" O. S. Advertiser. Clerk, county rates. MOTIONS. The Clerk was instructed to ask the C. T. to erase taxes for 1882 against 64 and 65 in 2 S. The Com. of Division 3 was ordered to at- tend to bridges 1 in eleven and 20 in 14 and report both. The Chairman of the K. and B. Committee stated that the Com. had examined the bridge at 16 in 2 S, and found it in a bad state of repair, and recommended that a small piece of land be bought for a deviation and do away with the old bridge altogether. The bridge at 6 in 4, and recommend that the committee for the Div attend to it. The bridge on 10 S. K. con. 2 S. and found it too lew, but do not recommend building a new one, owing to the low state of the finances and the lateness of the season. This report was adopted. Taylor, Speers â€" That the township be di- vided in two for collection for 1883, and that the gravel road be the boundary. Carried. Johnston, Mclntyre â€" In amendment, that the township be notdivided in two for collec- tion, but that one collector be appointed for collecting the rates for 1883. Lost. By-law 218 and 219 to appoint collectors and levy rates were passed, and Wm. Suggett was appointed coUector for the south and J EUiott for the north. Speers, Mclntyre â€" That J Johnston be authorized to survey and establish a road on lots 17 and 18, eon. 3 S. Orders were issued in favor of J Copeman, $15, building culvert; J.
