SQUEEZING A PRETTY GIRL- While several young couple were strolling along the walks of Sheridan, Neb., the other evening, one of the ladies felt that she was^being squeez- ed, but she said nothing about it un till she noticed that the gentleman who was walking with her was twirl- ing his cane in the hand she imagin- ed was producing the pleasing sensa- tion around her waist. On investiga- ting tJie matter she was horrified and her escort terrified to find a large black snake coiled tightly around her. Her "company" wouldn't go within a. rod of her, fleeing precipitately when she attempted to approach him. Fi- nally a farmer's boy went to the res- cue, and whacked the snake on the head with the but of his whip until ic let loose. The reptile was over four feet in length, and had squeezed the girl 80 tightly that several ol her cor- set stavs were broken and it is feared^ two of her ribs are cracked. The editor of Truth has been pfioto graphing some of the girls he knows, and hear is his picture of one of them â€" Letitia has a waist. It is her great point, and she is very proud of it. Well she may be, fur it is the result of patient years of pain. She has laid on the shrine of that little waist many precious things â€" good health, good temper and good spirits. Having sacrificed tha first, the two other followed as a matter of course. But then it is such wonderful waist It cannot rreasure more than seventeen inches, at the very most. The pressure has made her nose permanently red. Not all the waters of Araby would- make that nose white again. GoLDEr Wedding. â€" On the 24th of June, 1880, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Strain, sr., of Artemesia celebrated their golden wedding. They had nine cliildreu at that time all living, forty six grand children living, equal num- bers male a ndfemale, and one dead. Since the above date four grand chil- dren haye been added to the number, also three great grand childien wliile there has been three deaths, a daugh- ter, â-  Mrs. Frederick Armstrong and two grand childreq, a child, of Mr. Wm. Strain, of Flesheitou and Sarah, daughter of Mr. Wm. Arm- strong of this place whose premature death we noticed last week. Choked His Wife. â€" On Thursday last Robt. Quigley was brought before the Mayor cliarged with assaul- ting his wife and choking her. Robt. admitted the charge and the Mayor who evidently does not shave Judge Hughes' opinions, fined him $10 or 30 days, regretting that he could not giye the offended 6 years in the Penitentiary with a dose of the lash. The cowardly animal went to gaol, his wife declining *.o pay the fine. â€" Collingwuod Enterprise. Vennor's Almanac fob 1884, â€" The Qazette Printing Co. Montreal, have acquired from Mr. Vennor the copy- right of his Almanac for next year, and it will be issued by them in October, printed on good paper, and otherwise got up in an attractive from. Mr. Vennor states that the contents will be of unusual interest several new features being added. Booksellers and news agents should send in their orders early, and apnlications for advertising space for almanacn should be addressed to Mr. Richard White Managing Director, Gazette Printing Co., Montreal. Some reckless speculator, with more daring than exact knowledge of female characteristics, conceived the idea of having sixteen girls trained to play baseball and attract the public by the novelty of the entertainment. The girls in their fancy costumes, presen- ting a charming spectacle; but the play was very much below par. It is a well recognized fact that a woman cannot throw a ball straight and unl- ess she can use her apron to catch anything thrown at her she dodges out of the way. As exponents, there- fore of the noble game, the fair six- teen caoDOt be regarded as a success.
