Fair Time Highlights By the Ful-0-Pep Reporter To go, in a maitcr of hours, from what is sometimes described as "ju5t a small-time fair" to what is acknowledged !to be the world's greatest annual Exposition is an ill- imiinating experience. It was one which happened last week to the Ful-O-Pep ca.mera man and roving reporter; and both oi thera say that, on the whole, they're liable to remember their trip to the Fall Fair at Zurich, Ont. longer than the one to the C.N.E. ,Tt To- ronto. Not that they disparage any part of the great show that Elwood Hughes, Kate .-Vitken and all their horde of collaborators put on â- \x Toronto. They admired the vast new Grand Stund â€" the marvellous displays of manufactured goods and products from all over the world â€" and all the rest of it. Yet â€" somehow or other â€" at Zur- ich they felt more in touch with the real spirit which inspired the idea of these Fall Fairs. More people passed them â€" or bumped into tliem â€" in one minute before the booth concealing the Fat Lady at The Ex. than they saw all day at Zurich, Yet, at the latter point, there was the feeling that â€" even though you were a stranger â€" you were among friends. A great poet once wrote lines that ran something Uke, '"T'is not in growing like a tree â€" in bulk â€" that jnakes men better be" and so on. Fall Fairs like that of Zurfch and others we will cover in this series will never grow to the size of the Canadan National E.xhibition. They don't expect to do so â€" nor have those who make them pos- sible any hopes in that direction. Y'et both have a definite and im- portant place in the Canadian scene and the producers of Ful-t)- Pep are proud to pay both trib- ute. For both of these types of fairs â€" although in the case of the larger ones the intention is sometimes ob- scured by the bright Hghts and glit- ter â€" are a development of the idea that Canada grew from an unknown and presumably barren land into one of the world's great nations be- cause of her unparalleled national resources, and the intelligent use of them. Also that when Canadians forget that their real strength conies from the soil and what lies under, it will be a scrry day for all of us who live here.
