Rundown Properties And Their Assesment Value in the past, speaking of assess- ments, it hds 'been the custom in town and in country, to aliow iowei assessments on homes and lands whidh were »n a poor or rundown stale and to up the assessments on properties which were being improv- ed and taken care of in what is con- sidered a progressive way. The fact of the matter is, that under the present system of land and pro- perty taxation the ne'er-do.<well and his properties and the careless or lazy are being bonussed, w.hile the industrious and prideful citizen is being soaked. Looking over Western Ontario it .seems time now for assesors and municipal officials to make a change in such things a>> values on properties. F'or the good of the country, the present procedure should be rever- sed and those who show initiative and have pride in their homes and fanns should be assured of a more or less equitable assessment while those backward citizens who allow their properties through neglect or design to run down and the soil to deteriorate, should have their levies increased. Tliis may sound a little rough on the so-called poo*- resident, but circumstances could be taJ<en into account in certain -oorder-line eases and in this way there wouki be an incentive to impix)ve all lands and buildings everyiw-here. This idea is now being tried out by the Labour Government on British fai-ms and it is said to have resulted in a great rmprovement in farm conditions and yield. â€" St. Marys Journol-Argu5.
