Appetizing anytime of day. Easy-to-digest, too f t â- f ♦ * I i â- Â» * P * ♦ â- Â« â- Â»â-  « » f *â-  » * Radar - Super Secret of War Veii Ufted on 'Seeing Eye' Of Allied Figiiting Forces One of the great secret stories oC the war was released by London and Washington on the day of Ae war's ending â€" radar. Sir Stafford Cripps, who was chaii-man of tho British Radio Board during a great part of ra- dar's development, said: "Radar played a greater part In the whole â- war than the atom bomb itself. It contributed to the winning of the â- war more than any other single factor.'' Ae British and American censor- i^hip lifted the veil of secrecy from we invention, it became known tiiat radar: Played a major role in winning the battle of Britain and defeating ,.J^ Gsrman air blitz of 1940 and 1941: Helped to locate and sink the battleships Bisraarclc and Scharn- horst ; Enabled German industrial cities \f> be pulverized by huge bomber forces, despite darkness and cloud; Silenced German coastal batter- las in France before the D-Day landings in Normandy; Guided paratroops to their des- tinations; Helped to win the battle of the Atlantic; Defeated the flying l}omb, Ger- many's VI weapon. Principle Is Simple Its principle Is simple. It Is nothing more bban the transmls- fion of radio energy into the at- mo»phere. These waves speed through the air until they strike (^ object and then are deflected ^ck to be picked up on a recelv- mg set. The time elapsed between tbe transmission and Its receipt £ves you the distance of the tar- f«t; tjbe initial direction of tbe wikve, its position, says The Wln- rilipeg Free Press. Some of the Incredible feats per- formed by radar were announced & a recent news release from London, England. It can pick up hlln storms and even the tops of â- javes. It will locate planes In flight and provide the information for determining, not only their ' oourse and speed, but also their KILL THAT FLY A Fly breeds in garbage and manure, spreading disease *vgerms to everything it touch- e«. Flies multiply rapidly, but Fly-Tox destroys flies at a touch. Get a large bottle today. THERE ISONLYONE FIY-TOX KILIS INSSCT PFSTS altitude. It can and does pick tip so small an object as a flying bird. Furthermore, it will trace out land contours with the accuracy of a chart. It has removed almost all, it not all, the hazards of fog, ice and collision at sea. Merchant Ships To Profit It is easy to see how merchant ships will profit by the addition of radar. Shipping so equipped will no longer be hobbled by fog or forced to alternative and longer routes by ice, as frequently hap- pens off the Canadian east coast. But it will be more important still on the less travelled commercial runs. A good example is the Hudson Bay route to Churchill where navi- gational aids are few and far be- tween and magnetic disturbances add additional hazards. A freight- er carrying radar will be able to World Hopper A super-bomber of the typ« which Gen. Hency H. AMoU]^ commander 6t ttie U. S. Air Forces, says the Army now hi^ could circle the earth at th« equator ire only three jumps. Circumference of the equator ia 24,902 mil6$. A range two and one-half to three times that oC a B-29 would permit the super* bomber to fly 90OO to 10,800 miles Without landing. thread Us way through tlie uorth- ern passages with Its sets provid- ing an unerring picture of the land. Furthermore, the majority of modern freighters are now equip- ped with Sperry gyro compasses, an added advantage In northern waters where the neainess of the magnetic pole plays hob with the standard magnetic compass. Canadians' Role Something of the part Canadians played in the radar war was told in news despatches which accom- panied the original release. Nearly r.,000 Canadian radar mechanics and officers 'answered an appeal for such technicians by Britain. This was more than half of the total serving in the R.A.F.'s ground and air installations in the Euro- pean and Pacific theatres. Basic training in radar principles was provideil in 15 Canadian uni- versities and so competent were the men turned out in these cours- es that they were soon to be found in nearly every field where radar was operating. Canadian radar officers and tecliniciaiis 'vere also appointed to many ships of the Royal Navy, in addition, of lunrse. to manning the Canadian Navy's own ves- sels. . . . German ladar •<leveliMpnients never matched those of the .Vlliea, neither did tlicir efforts to I'ounler the effects of this weapon. The Nazis lagged in this, as Ihey did in so many otlier fields of research during the war. It was fortunate for us they did. Super-Nylons lo La«t Ten Years? The probubilily of a supcrnylon was predicted by Dr. tJeodge R. Harrison, head of the physics de- partment of Massachusetts Insti- tute of 1 cilinolofijy. Super-nylons might be expected to make n stocking to last ten years, or to stand extraordinary wear without (luiekly l>eiug woru out, he said. WHAT SCIENCE !S DCINC Piloes Night Light We were the first country to engage extensively in night-fight- ing, writes the London correspon- dent of the Ottawa .lournal. Its prol)loui9- have b e e en studied scientifically by the R.A.F., and big improvements devised. Above all things a night pilot needs to see objects outside the aircraft, iHit he is handicapped and dazzled by the lighting needed for the con- trols in the cockpit and by reflec- tion 'from the wind and side- stream. He has been, therefore, in « worse case than anyone trying to see out of a lighted room at night. A new method of duel system lighting has now been devised which provides fiourescent light- ing for the instrument panel and red lighting to illuminate the cock- pit. By these means reflections are eliminated and the cockpit ligiiling interferes only to a neg- ligible degree with vision of out- side objects. Eye-strain and general fatigue are reduced to the minimum. The fluorescent lighting is obtained by painting the instruments, much as the hands of a watch are made luminous. The interior red light has the advantage that objects show up brightly when directly ob- served but fade out when the ob- server looks away from them. Moreover, tlie pilot can regulate Uie strength of the lighting ac- cording to requirements. BRITAIN HONORS ITS WAR LEADERS Canada Has No Jeeps for Civilians Plagued by tens of thousands of requests.
