The Future of Censorship (By Norman Marshall) OTTAWA: Among those govern- ment offices which are being greatly reduced in size with the end of the war in Europe are those of Pres_ and Postal censorship. Postal cen sorship is now confined largely to the mail of the 35,000 prisoners of war in Canada, and changes in the set-up of Press censorsihdp are ex- pected shortly. Outside of Ottawa however, cen- sorship has not ceased with the close of the European struggle. No official statement has yet been made here on the government's view of the tight censorship which sur- rounds the Big Three conference at Potsdam. While Canadian leaders are not actually taking part there, Canada, as a member of the United Nations, with both financial and political committments to that body, has a very real concern with the de- cisions made here. Criticism of the censorship blackout has come from the British and American press and from the Senate in Washingrton. While admitting that much of the discussion a Potsdam centers on the war in the Pacific, and can there- fore be justly kept secret for mili- tary reasons, these critics maintain that the plans of the Big Three for economic and political supervision of Europe should be made openly. Officials sources here are also si- lent over the attacks, launched par- ticularly from the United States, against allied policy in the Balkans, and especially againsit the opera- tions of UNRA. Not only has a pol- itical crisis developed within the past two weeks between Greece and Yugo-Slavia, but political censor- ship has survived in Greece months after all military need had disap- peared. This cloud of politcial cen- sorship has permitted suspicion to appear in isolationist circles con- cerning the workings of UNRA in Greece. And yet political censorship may not have ceased altogether in Ot- tawa itself. There is the story of Major Robin Eraser, D.S.O. of Tor- onto, that, following the charges made last Fall by Major Conny Smythe abqut overseas reinforce- ments, an order had been issued by the army overseas tbit copies of all «r^tements mad? to the press by re- turning veterans were to be sent to di.itrict headquarters and thein to Ottawa. While thei-e are reason- able grounds for this regulation. Major Eraser stated that it led to fear on the part of returning veter- ans that they could not speak their minds about possible grievances without losing their gratuities. This order comes perilously near to out- right censorship though not actual- ly bearing that nante. Small Ads, FOR SALE â€" Young sow due Aug. 16â€" John A. Shortreed, Priceville.
