Baptist Church By Rev. F. Ashton) The Shadow is found in the state- ment "there was no room for them in I he Inn." St. Luke. Ch. 2. Verse 7. Christmas should be a time of real joy and gladness. A time to appreciate God's Christmas jfift as never before. At Christmas we commemorate the birthday of that wonderful gift. God was the first and only true Santa Claus.all the rest are imitators. God .started Christmas, and started it at Bethlehem, and yet there is a shadow. 'No room'' for Him, God's Christmas pidPt. Is it possible to grrasp the full significance of this? The poignancy, the tragedy of it all? "Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet Head. The stars in the bright sky. Looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleen on the hay." iNo aouot tsetnieaem was crowded to tne limit at cne time oi tiiat great utigistrawoa. Hospitality woma be taxeU to the utmost, uence tne reason ^1 tne overcrowaed inn. The reason why Joseph and Mary had to make ttieir aDiQing place with the Cattle. ••Of all sad things of tongue or pen, Ine saddest are tnese â€" It mignt have been." (Whittier) What a ditferent .story could have been told if the other jfuests of the Inn had known that a ttoyai Infant was to be born there: The Messiah â€" "TheDesire of all na- tions", laid in a ilanger because there was "no room in the Inn". Had they known they would have vied with each other to give the Babe and His Mother the very best they had. Yea, the Landlord would have given up his own rooms to accommodate the Virgin mo- ther and her Royal Son. They did not know and their ignorance was the cause of their indifference and seem- ing callousness. However let us note briefly that while earth was indiffer- ent, Heaven could hardly wait to send her Angelic Choir to sing the glorious anthem: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth Peace, goodwill toward men."Luke CH. 2, Verse 14. Heaven lifted the shadow, and made all earth beautiful. "Jesus my Saviour to Bethlehem came. Bom in a manger to sorrow and shame. O it was wonder. ful blest be His name. Seeking for me, for me." "Fear nof'said the Angel '•for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy. which shall be to all people. For unto you is bom this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Just read the story for yourself, it is a wonderful "^tory. and true. Then in closing let me ask, is there any semblance of a shadow upon our Christmas activities? In other words is there room for Jesus in all our planning and preparing? In our giv- ing and receiving of gifts. Is there any room for Jesus in our merry- making and feasting? Sad is the fact the shadow is still with us. "No room" for Him, God"s Love Gift in many hearts and homes today. It is still a tragedy that in our so called Christian civilization many have no room for the Christ who started it. Mv friend, do you really desire to have :i happy Christmas ? Do you ? Then just open the door of your heart, and the door of your home to Him who stands outside waiting to come in. •Behold I stand at the door and knock: If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him. and will sup with him. and he with Me. Revelations 3. Verso 20. "Christians awake, salute the happ;^ morn. Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born. Rise to adore the mystery of love. Which Hosts of Angels chanted from above. With them the joyful tidings first begun. Of God incarnate and the Virgin's Son. Then to the watchful Shepherds it was told. Who heard the angelic herald's voice 'Behold' I bring you good tidings of a Sav- iour's birth. To vou and all the nations upon earth : This day hath God fulfilled His prom- ised word. This day is born a Saviour. Christ the Lord.'' C. N. J. FISHER HAPPY CHRISTMAS We extend thanks to our many friends and customers for their patronage duringf the year now closing, with sincere good wishes for a HAPPY CHRISTMAS '^ and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 0. & A. Co-operalive Co., Ltd. United Church (By Rev. G. R. Service) St. John's United Church Pastor, Official Board, and people wish to ex- tend to our sister Congregations and to the whole community our warmest Christmas Greetings. Christmas is one of the church's fes- tivals which has not been retained within her own walls but has over- flowed into the community and throughout the whole wide world. We hail the birthday of Jesus be cause of what He was, and the new era which He introduced: because of the impact which His life has made upon the world: and on account of the church which immediately came into being because He lived. The church has been the one body of people which down through the cen- turies has consistently endeavoured to make his dreams and visions come true. Christ, without the church, would soon have been lost in the debris of history; and the church without Christ would soon have become defunct and meaningless. Christ and the church or Christmas and the church should always be t'win thoughts. Christmas in the church is Christmas in its right environment, but Christmas, without thought of either Christ or the church, becomes only an empty and pagan festival. Let us then as we approach the birthday of our Lord put Him in his proper setting as we surround Him with the spirit of worship and thank- fulness to .\lniighty God. that in His Divine Wisdom He saw fit to send His Son into the world that men should learn to know, honour and love God.
