Labors at night school, and assiduity and initiative in business brought promotion in every firm for which he worked, and his interests were not confined to business alone. We are proud to publish this as the first and possibly the lengthiest of the little • sketches that we hope to present in the little booklet of "Flesherton Mem- ories" to appear this summer. DOG ANTIQUARIANS The Advance has refceived conv- plaints from citizens regarding dogs which are allowed to run at large. Their complaints are directed more particularly against the variety of canines known as hounds. These s'.nimals are addicted to rumaging in gardens and making a bone yard of tulip beds. When remonstrated with 1 y owners of said beds they become â- > icious and show fight in a manner I'lat no self-respecting dog would exhibit before a lady, as much as to ; ay "We are licensed dogs!" Per- haps they are and perhaps they are rot. There are dogs that are not )' censed and none of them bear the rietal badge of honor. Their own- ers should repress the antiquarian )-stincts of their dogs by impressing I'pon them the wisdom of refraining f'-om digging in flower beds for J slics. The best way to do this is to tie them up. broke the line and escaped? This is the season when the tall fish yarns are hatched to be spur, next winter. • • • ' The big towns have started in on daylight saving. No Canadian need be a laggard. It u open to every man to be his own daylight saver, by getting up with the sun. • • » Lloyd George, in characteristic language, tells his fellow Britishers that it is high time they started a new war â€" not against Germans and Turki, but against worklessness, pov- c'xty, over-crowding and squalor. • « â- Some time ago it was hinted that the Conservative party would not lose any seats in the shuffle of constituen- cies in the Ontario Legislature. The opposite appears to be the case as the Conservatives have lost 18 seats, the Liberal'3 and Progressives one each. Whether this change enhances their chances in the next election re- mains to be seen. • • • Wonder is still expressed that in Canada a land of plenty â€" there should be so much poverty and dis- tjes3. The explanation is given in a recent report on taxation in the Dominion. It has been ascertained that the aggregate tax levy imposed Viy all government bodies is equal to fourteen times that borne by the Canadian people thirty-five years ago. This increase in tax levies far out-runs that of basic industrial and financial development and continues to mount by leaps and bounds, aided by fc'ver-increasing commissions and other spending bodies. We cannot too soon inaugurate an era of econ- omy and pay as you go. For this great increase of taxation has been imposed, though supplemented by the marketing of vast timber limits and other natural resources. EDITORIAL ITEMS before the budget was brought down sugar suddenly started to leave the refineries and warehouses, finding hi way into the hands of wholesalers throughout the length and breadth of Canada, so much so that one con- ci'rn in Montreal is rumored to have taken 70,000 bags on which in twenty minutes it made a profit of $140,000. You can go to every city in Canada â€" and you will find that the whole- salers were tipped off dnd that car- loads of sugar had been shipped to them prior to the budget. "1 will go further than that. The day before the budget was delivered, in the city of Montreal alone, on St. Paul Street, they could not get enough motor trucks to take the sugar out of the refineries, so they hired taxi cabs to haul the commodity away' from the refineries to the wholesal- ers." Mr. Coote suggested that the Act governing insurance be amended to provide protection for the policy hold- ers, that is, where there ia a loan value under the policy sufficient to meet the premium that the premium would be advanced automatically. This, however, does not account for the very large profits made by To- ronto and Montreal firms. It looks as though the news got abroad before the budget came down, or else a large number of people are very clever at forecasting budgets. In speaking on the subject, Mr. Howard said: "I would not suggest that any information leaked out from the Cabinet (regarding the sugai tax). But I will -aay that sugar re- fineries in Canada thirty days prev- ious to the bringing down of the budget were stocked with sugar; the storage houses were filled to over- flowing. The supply was being ab- sorbed very -slowly because of the low purchasing power, but shortly favorable for the development of apple scab. MORAL: Spray early, and keep spraying. Flesherton's half holiday commenc- es this Thursday afternoon. "Best secretary we ever had" This was the verdict of the Elm County Association members before Phil Burton had been in office six months. His niinutes were always clear and he knew how to read them. But best of all was the way he lined the crowd up for each meeting. The usual notice, quite apt to be forgotten in the stress of other mat- ters, was not enough for Phil. The night before each meeting he would call each member on the telephone and remind him. The result was bumper meetings that got down to business a ad produced results. The telephone is indispensable. It is so much part and parcel of your daily life that you cannot do with- out it. For 30 cents you can lelephooe about 100 miles by making an "any- one" call (station- to-ttation) after 8.30 p.m. Sec list of rates in from of directory. ^uia4tct tg awrprtatii^ly inexp e » s ive Â¥' i^P^^l xS^vSxaoA %i Home Owners must make application for survey of premises to secure Free Electric Plat Rate Water Heaters IN ORDER to seoire early installation of free electric flat rate water heaters it is necessary for house-owners, landlords and tenants to send in their application now, by means of the coupon shown below.
