FLESHERTON : THURSDAY, NOV. '20, 1884. COMMUTING SENTENCES OF DEATH. The principal of getting up petitions ill order to cheat the gallows of its due ia a subject worthy of grave consider- ation. In some instances the circum- stances arc of such an extenuating character, that petitions praying for the commutation of death sentences to imprisonment for life, or a long term of penal servitude, arc quite in place ; but in the majority of cases, the tendency of sucli petitions is to encourage crime. When a man has committed some heinous crime, for which ho is tried by an intelligent judge aud jury aud found guilty and where there arc no extenuating cir- cumstancesthe sentence of tho court should be carried out to the very letter. It is an inherent principal of our nature to svmpatlii/e for a man who thus stands on the verge of the gall >ws. Itut we should not be carried away by our feelings. The laws of the land riust bo respected and maintained; ami if wo would keep crime in check, our feelings must not be allowed to interfere with our ;>/u *u<y. Just now, we arc informed, there is a movement on foot to get up a peti- tion, praying that the sentence of death passed on Cook Teets, on the 5tli iudt., bo commuted to imprison- ment for life. It will he well for those iutmstt-d to re-member that Cook 'I'n ;s has had a fair trial ; he has been found guilty of one of the worst crimes in calender, by one of the most intel- ligent juries that has ever sat on a case at the (iivy assize court ; and, that Judge Armour one of the best criminal judges in the Dominion ex- pressed his entire coucuiTcnce in the verdict of that jury. True, there was a recommendation to mercy, but that, we opine, was merely a matter of ' courtesy " if there be such a thing in dialing with criminals. The fact thai he wua foui.d guilty of murder in the first dcgn-o completely swallows up liio " recommendation to mercy." In (U livcring tin; sentence of death Judge Armour held out no hopes that it would be commuted, hut ex- lir>ii~,l eLe coiuli miiid rnaii to innke ' use of the short time in whieli he hail to live, to prepare to meet his God. In view of tin se mnl many other f.u- hrouglii out at the trial, it will ho wi 11 for would-be petitioners to ex- .1 ei.-it.ii. i iiin.iinit df fare, al- tln.'i;li we frankly conl'iss it is our t that n i iinJiir wlnit is dune the sentence of the court will he e.mied out. The question of annexing the ishnd of Jamaica t one of the West Indies) to ('muda has been much dincusBcd during tho past tow months. The Murkdnle Stiinditrd last weok gave currency to the vaguo rumor, that Cook Teets had atUinpted to poison himself sinco he was seiiti mvrl to death. Tho thing scetns most ab- surd, as it is not likely that they keep poison lying around our connty goal for tho purpose of giving criminals a chanco to cheat the gallown by com- mitting suicide.
