The West Oak Trails Skateboard Park was installed in late July of 2009 and although it was widely used during the day without incident, issues with inap- propriate youth activity during the evening and early morning hours developed. Nearby residents also complained that the unique metal-on-wood and metalon-metal noise that occurs when a skateboarder uses the park was constant and created a real quality-of-life issue. Council voted to remove the facility following discussions with skatepark users and area residents. The temporary skateboard park at the Glen Abbey Community Centre is now open and is scheduled to stay open until Sept. 10, when it must close to allow for the necessary parking as fall programming and activities increase at the centre. Town cleaning up local air The Town of Oakville recently received a Recognition of Achievement Award at the GTA Clean Air Council's Clean Air and Climate Change Summit for meeting approximately 80 per cent of the Intergovernmental Declaration on Clean Air and Climate Change targets for 2008 and 2009. The Clean Air and Climate Change targets met by the Town over 2008 and 2009 include phasing out bottled water from Town Hall, developing corporate energy and community action plans, implementing a green purchasing procedure, installing LED traffic signals and streetlights, and participating in the Smart Commute program. The Town's new Clean Air Strategy that includes enhanced smog, heat and health response efforts was endorsed by the Community Services Committee (CSC) in June. A progress report on the implementation of the town's Green Fleet Procedure was also brought to CSC June 8. The procedure is identified in the Clean Air Strategy as one of the Town's long-term corporate actions to protect air quality by reducing the environmental impacts of the town's fleet. In 2009 two more hybrid vehicles were purchased, bringing the total owned by the town to 12. SmartDriver training for Oakville Transit drivers, also implemented in 2009, teaches drivers to minimize idling and operate the Town's buses to get the best fuel efficiency possible and the least wear and tear. As older buses are retired and the new transit facility is completed in 2011, there will be enough space to house and maintain new hybrid buses.
