OCF golfers raise marathon of cash An entire day on a wide open, gloriously green Glen Abbey golf course may sound like heaven to an avid golfer. But for 30 dedicated community-builders, it was much more than an average round, as they marked the Oakville Community Foundation's (OCF) 12th annual Marathon of Golf. Participants, who raised a total of $170,000 this year, played a speedy 100 holes over 11 hours. "It really is a marathon," smiles OCF CEO Rusty Baillie, who admits to sleeping with an ice pack after the grueling event. of the OCF's early chairs who encouraged Etherington to make it a reality. "I heard about the idea in the early nineties in South Carolina and brought it back to Canada," explains Etherington, who then founded the Paul Henderson Marathon of Golf for Campus Crusade For Christ. "That was 15 years ago and it took off. I then started to talk with the OCF about the idea and it took about three years to make the sale." Etherington wanted to create "a friend and fundraiser" for the foundation, with the hope that the marathon would become a regular stream of revenue in support of the OCF's work in the community. To date, it is the OCF's sole fundraiser. He laughs at the memory of being called crazy. "As Einstein said, only those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible." After 12 years, $2 million, thousands of lost balls and more blisters and calluses than one can count, many would agree it's a crazy event -- crazy successful. "It really is wonderful to see what can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit and all pull together `fore' our community," he said. This year, Etherington steps down as chair of the marathon, and hands the driver over to former OCF board chair Terry Jackson. The transition from one gifted leader to the next, Baillie anticipates, will be seamless. "I'm happy to assume the leadership of this event, that contributes so much to the Oakville community," said Jackson, a longtime Oakville resident. "I look forward to following Bruce's example and carrying on the marathon tradition." Building community vitality is the purpose, promise and passion of the OCF. For 15 years, the OCF has brought people together, connected donors to community needs and opportunities, and helped build strong, resilient places to live, work and play by granting more than $15 million through its family of endowments to charitable organizations.
