7 · Wednesday, July 7, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Black Bloc stole attention from peaceful protests Continued from page 6 that were displayed on television, radio and print media over the weekend. The Black Bloc, whom we have all come to recognize as anarchists, were not in any way a part of the peaceful labour march and protest. The Black Bloc stole the headlines with its actions and use of destruction. The Oakville and District Labour Council was represented at the peaceful march and protest, but were back on the buses at 3:45 p.m. and getting ready to head home when the terror began. I am pleased to say that no activist from Oakville took part in the mayhem that followed and I want to thank all of the delegates from the ODLC, CAW, OSSTF, ETFO, CUPW, CUPE, OPSEU, CEP and anyone else who might have joined our fine people of Oakville on the march through Toronto on the Saturday of the summits. The Prime Minister will try to claim that the overspending on security for the G20 summit should be justified considering what went on. However, how can you justify a $1-billion bill after what occurred? The reputation of not only Toronto, but also all surrounding areas, as well as the Province of Ontario will take a hit due to the mayhem that occurred. The cost will be far higher to rebuild our reputation than for the security measures that were put into place. The costs should never have been allowed to happen. As labour activists, we can find a lot better ways to improve not only the City of Toronto, but there are countless numbers of social programs, helping the homeless, building the United Ways etc., etc. that could have done more to help Toronto than the supposed help the Prime Minister actually gave by putting this meeting in the heart of Toronto.. The Oakville and District Labour Council represents more than 25,000 women and men who work in every sector of the economy of Oakville and a large part of Halton.
