Mayoral candidate and former Town bylaw enforcement officer John Kay formally withdrew his candidacy Monday to protest what he sees as a lack of transparency within Town council. Kay said he is completely dissatisfied with the policy in place that candidates must use to gain information about Town of Oakville services and operations. He contends the policy bars the way to the answers he is seeking. "If I have questions about anything, I have to either fax it in or write up a piece of paper and submit that question and then they give me an answer in seven days or they say, `Well we can't answer that question,'" said Kay. "I couldn't talk to my councillors. Mary Chapin sent me an e-mail back stating that I had to go through this procedure to ask any questions. So, I'm better off as a resident and so that's what I am now. I'm back to resident status and I'm using that to ask the questions that I think I should be able to ask even as a registered candidate."
