Councillor alerts police to impaired driver By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 9 · Wednesday, July 7, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com A 44-year-old Oakville woman is facing impaired driving charges after a terrifying ride through town, which was witnessed by a local councillor. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll was driving north on Kerr Street Monday afternoon when he witnessed a jeep-type vehicle driving erratically just past the Kerr Street overpass. "I saw this jeep-style vehicle go over the curb and throw up a lot of dust in the air," said Knoll. "I was just behind her and that sort of alerted me that something was amiss." More strange behaviour followed, said Knoll, with the jeep crossing the centre line and suddenly speeding up and slowing down. At this point Knoll got on his speakerphone and called Halton police. As Knoll described the vehicle and what it was doing to police, he followed it up Dorval Drive and across Upper Middle Road. All the while, he said, the person's driving skills continued to deteriorate in front of him. "I was becoming more and more concerned about the person's driving behaviour and emphasized to the police that this was not just a minor issue, but someone who was going to end up in an accident," he said. "I saw that she almost ran into several cars and then suddenly on Upper Middle Road stopped abruptly at Oxford Avenue and sat there for a minute." At this point, Knoll said the driver suddenly turned right on Oxford Avenue, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with a car stopped at the Oxford Avenue stop sign and again mounting the curb before continuing down the road. While Knoll said he was concerned the vehicle had now moved into a residential area, he was told by police that officers were on the way and that he should stop following the vehicle, which he did. "All the while I was worried something was going to happen, and sure enough, about a half hour later I get a call from the police saying they want to come by and take a statement because the driver had been involved in a personal injury accident," said Knoll. "I did what I could. I wish I could have done more. When I heard there was a personal injury accident I was worried sick that somebody was a helpless victim of another impaired driver. For me, it just really sent home the message that this is just such a significant issue." Police said the driver of the jeep-type vehicle crashed into another car in the area of Oxford Avenue and Oliver Place. No one was injured, but the driver of the jeep was taken to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital as a precaution. Police said when tested the woman was found to be more than four times over the legal blood alcohol limit. EST.1976 "The Halton Regional Police Service would like to remind the public of the dangers of drinking and driving and encourage you to use 911 to report suspected impaired drivers as this is a crime in progress," said Halton Police Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Brian Carr. Knoll said he has seen the aftermath of accidents before, but stated that seeing one as it was unfolding was a new experience for him. "For me it was a real eye-opener to how important it is that everybody be on guard for this and not be timid about calling these things in," he said. "I can only think about what would have happened if a child had darted out in front of this driver."
