400 dancers perform, support children's charity By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Some 375 to 400 dancers will hit the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts stage this weekend to entertain crowds with the moves they learned over the last year. Oakville's Allegro School of Dance is holding its end-of-year dance recitals Saturday and Sunday with dancers aged three to adult performing ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and acro. Acro is a combination of dance and acrobatics. Not all dancers will perform at every one of the four recitals. There are two recitals per day. This year's recital raises money for the Canadian charity Kids Help Phone. One dollar from each ticket sold will go to the charity. With the charity in mind, the theme for the shows will be about children dealing with their emotions as they grow up. "The dancers will emulate emotions," said the school's owner and director Laura Dacyshyn. "I try to find a connection with the charity." The school does a charity fundraiser at its annual show and this year Dacyshyn chose Kids Help Phone to educate her students, who are mostly children, about the problems others their age may have. "It brings awareness to the kids about Kids Help Phone if they have problems, but more importantly so that they remember the kids that might have bigger problems than them," she said. "Some kids didn't know what it was until I spoke about it because they never had a reason to but there are kids out there who do need it," she said. Because most of her students are children, Dacyshyn said she believes this charity introduces an appropriate subject matter to the youngsters. "It's important to know you have somewhere to call," she added. She expects to raise as much as $1,800 for the charity at $1 per person. She added, "Having this many people attend a show is a good platform to promote a charity." The school formed about eight years ago. There is a pre-registration price offer until July 1 to join. The dance recitals take place at 1 and 6 p.m. on both days. The shows are about three hours in duration.
