The fledgling filmmaker, Dave Whiffen, will screen his 45-minute science-fiction movie, Singularity, at the school's drama theatre on Tuesday, June 29. The 18 year old graduated from the school a year ago. Holy Trinity is also the place where much of his cast and crew were recruited. The film takes place at a time when a technology company, which has bought out companies such as Apple, Google and Facebook, has created technology that has become almost essential to people's daily lives. At least two individuals, including the main character, Chase (played by Will Charlton), learn the corporation, the Axel Company, is plotting something evil through the use of the new technology. "I was doing this project (for class) and I came across this theory called Singularity of Dave Whiffen All Things by Dr. Ray Kurzweil. It's basically about an accelerated future and how technology grows at an exponential rate," he said. "What this theory states is sometime in the near future man is going to have to merge with technology in order to survive. I took that theory and created a story around it." Whiffen drew some 30 people to act in and produce the film, all of whom volunteered. Most of the volunteers came from his former school, but he also drew support from students of the neighbouring Iroquois Ridge High School as well as Sheridan and Humber colleges and the University of Toronto Mississauga. "I've been working on it on and off for about a year," he said. The film was shot on highdefinition cameras with hours spent on multiple shoots. Admission to the screening is free, but Whiffen asks people to make a donation at the door. All proceeds go to Hope. Hope is a new student organization that helps support local families struggling financially to pay for cancer therapy, according to Whiffen. "One hundred per cent of the proceeds is going to local families that are going through cancer," he said. The reason he chose Hope is because he has a close friend who lost her mom to cancer and he knows many others who have dealt with cancer. Whiffen was accepted into Ryerson University for radio and television and hopes to get into filmmaking as a career. He's also working for Leafs TV through an internship.
