Oakville Trafalgar High School (OTHS) Grade 10 History Teacher Pam Calvert said this desire to keep the memory of First World War and Second World War soldiers alive motivated her to task her students with remarkable projects aimed at uncovering not only how local soldiers died, but also how they lived. These projects were recognized at a national level, Wednesday, when it was announced Calvert was among 25 finalists for this year's Governor General's Awards for Excellence in the Teaching of Canadian History. The finalists are selected, annually, from among hundreds of nominees from across Canada with the number eventually being whittled down to six award recipients. Canada's History Society CEO Deborah Morrison talked about why Calvert was chosen to be one of the 25 finalists. "World War I and II are a big part of the Grade 10 curriculum so it is pretty necessary for teachers to come up with innovative strategies. It can be hard to keep their (students') attention on something that happened almost a hundred years ago," she said.
