Keep immunizations current Halton Region's health department encourages residents to make sure the immunization records for themselves and their children are up-to-date. "Immunizations are scientifically proven to be safe and effective yet the protection levels of some immunizations, such as tetanus and diphtheria, can weaken over time and need regular booster doses," Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal said in a media release. "Many vaccine-preventable diseases can have serious or life threatening health effects; however if we all keep our immunizations up-to-date, we can potentially eliminate the risk." Over the past five years, influenza, streptococcal pneumonia and pertussis (whooping cough) were the most commonly reported vaccine-preventable diseases in Halton. According to the health department, "Immunization has saved more lives in Canada in the past 50 years than any other health intervention and is the single most cost-effective health investment, making it a cornerstone in the effort to promote and protect health." If you're unsure whether your current immunizations are up-to-date, contact the Halton Region Health Department and ask to speak to an immunization nurse.
