SEMINAR DATES THURSDAY, JUNE 24TH, 2010 Afternoon Session 1:00 pm 3:00 pm Evening Session 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Burlington Arts Center (Rotary Room) 1333 Lakeshore Rd., Burlington, On Teaching others to swim can be a fun job, but for one Oakville youth the repetition of filling out report cards was a tedious process. It was this unattractive portion of his job that led Oakville's Justin Vanderheide to write a piece of software to do it for him. This software is now used by instructors at all Town of Oakville pools. It was this software that led him to becoming one of the recipients of this year's Canada's Top 20 Under 20 awards. He's one of two Oakville youths who received the award last week. "It's been amazing," the 17year-old said. "When I first won I didn't completely know everything that was going to come out of it. But when we spent a week in Toronto, it was just amazing all the stuff we did." The awards are handed out annually to the top 20 Canadian youths in recognition of the innovation and contributions they make in their endeavours. A sponsor must nominate the individual. The recipients spent a week in Toronto where they attended seminars and workshops for things such as media and etiquette training, and met CEOs of successful companies. The Grade 12 Abbey Park High School student was a swim instructor for the Town last year when he wrote the software, called Swimgen. "We have to write a lot of report cards for swimming so it gets pretty tedious after a while," he said. "I was doing report cards late one night at the pool and thought, man I Justin Vanderheide wish I had a program that could write the report cards for me." He didn't stop with wishing. He went and wrote the software himself. He began working on it last summer. He wrote it as a desktop application first and then had it go live online. It was first used at the Glen Abbey pool and this spring it is being used by the Town's indoor pools and will also be introduced to the outdoor pools this summer. "It's really cool to actually write something and see people using it." With Swimgen, the instructor enters a student's name and from a drop down menu selects the student's strengths and weak areas. The software generates comments to the student that have been pre-written by Vanderheide along with the Town. The software avoids repetition of comments. "It's different every time," Vanderheide said. "So if I have two people who have similar strengths and weaknesses they're going to have two completely distinct report cards." He is not getting paid for this software, at least not yet. The Lifesaving Society of Canada created the learn to swim program that the Town is teaching and it pays a fee to the society to run the program. "I've met with the Lifesaving Society so what I'm trying to do is partner with it and if I can do that, then every municipality and every swim instructor who teaches the program in their backyard in Canada would be able to use Swimgen and then I would be able to get a little fee from them each month," he said. For Vanderheide, the award is more than just seminars. "We have a year of career coaching, we have a year of mentoring and all kinds of other things now. It's just amazing," he said. "They're looking for a mentor for me that's actually in the field of computer science developing software. So once I'm linked up with that mentor, I'm sure it's going to be incredible to be able to bounce ideas off them, talk to them about their thoughts and ideas." Vanderheide is going to study computer sciences at the University of Waterloo next year and aims to become a software programmer. He's already written other software. He received a bit of programming instruction when he was a young child, but didn't truly get into it until high school. He said the award is a great thing to put on his resume. "Only 20 people a year can say they've won the Top 20 Under 20 award so it's definitely a pretty outstanding award," he said. He also aims to expand Swimgen to incorporate other sports as well.
