Hennessy sisters competitive but also supportive of each other Continued from page 31 35 · Wednesday, June 9, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com some seeds of doubt. Still, she qualified for regionals and came back with two strong runs. At OFSAA, she posted the best qualifying time and then backed it up by winning the senior girls' 1,500m gold in 10 minutes, 12.65 seconds. And though there may be a little underlying competitiveness between them, there is unhidden support. "It was exciting to win a medal and then watch Colleen do the same thing," Kelly said. The next day, the roles were reversed. Colleen ran first and through six laps, it was a tightly-bunched pack. Then both Carise Thompson of Dundas and Madeline Davidson began to pull away. Both had fresh legs, having not run the 1,500m and its preliminaries the previous two days, but Hennessy made the move with them. She chased down Davidson and came in just two seconds behind Thompson to earn the silver. Having just received her medal, Colleen was trackside as Kelly's race began. "It was amazing. I was screaming at her. It's a longer race so I just wanted to keep encouraging her," Colleen said. Though she usually doesn't start her finishing kick until the last 200 metres, Kelly thought back to the 1,500. Not wanting to leave any chance for someone to catch her, she made her move with 400 metres to go. "I could tell she was ready to pick it up at the end," Colleen said. "I knew she really wanted it." Kelly crossed the line first in 10 minutes, 12.76 seconds but the drama wasn't finished. There were two disqualifications among the medalists (for crossing to the inside lane too quickly on the first lap) and she had to wait nervously before finding out she was not among them. The gold capped a remarkable weekend for the sisters. "The fact that we both got gold and silver makes it that much more special," Colleen said. "As coaches we are blessed with the talent we receive," DiDiodato said. "We just provide them with the opportunity to shine and there are a few rare times in our career that people like this come our way." Colleen's five OFSAA medals -- she also won cross-country gold in Grade 10 -- is certainly a rare feat. But maybe not so rare if her sister has anything to do with it. Asked if she can match her sister's OFSAA haul, Kelly smiles. "Yeah, no problem."
