9 · Wednesday, June 9, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2010 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students The Halton District School Board recently hosted its 26th annual Celebration of Student Excellence, an evening that recognized one student from each of the board's schools -- including 32 in Oakville. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. This is the first of several installments profiling the Oakville public school students. · Lexi Doherty, Abbey Lane, Grade 8: She is involved as a player and coach in extra-curricular sports such as volleyball, basketball and cross-country running. Lexi is a member of many clubs at the school, and can always be called upon to help out in the office at lunch time. While maintaining honour role standing, Lexi is very involved in charity work for the Salvation Army and her church. · Madelaine Watzeck, Brantwood, Grade 5: Maddy is kind, considerate and inclusive. She handles challenges with patience and demonstrates maturity and quiet leadership. Maddy is always ready to become involved in school activities, and can be counted on to be cooperative and responsible. Hilary Wilush, Brookdale, Grade 8: Hilary has earned honours in every intermediate semester. A member of girls volleyball, basketball team and robotics team, she leads the school in her role as our Student Parliament Prime Minister. · Sonam Upadhyaya, Captain R. Wilson, Grade 8: A member of the Student Senate with the Halton District School Board and a member of her school's Student Leadership Council. Sonam is an energetic leader who is a member of the a valued member of Chisholm's community. The effort she demonstrates in her academics along with her contributions outside the classroom makes Claire an excellent choice to represent Chisholm as a Student of Excellence. · Logan Hannay, E.J. James Grade 8: Displaying great leadership on student council, Logan is a quiet and supportive leader who consistently motivates others within the council. Logan showed the same leadership on the volleyball team. Extremely kind to her classmates, she never puts others down, acting as a good role model for her fellow students. · Aimee Harper, Eastview, Grade 8: Aimee is Eastview's Student of Excellence due to her ongoing involvement in extracurricular activities (i.e., concert band, QDF leader, cross-country, volleyball, basketball) and her high academic standing as demonstrated through consistent honour roll achievement. Aimee is a respected role model to others in the school and always keeps a positive attitude. · Taylor Wiseman, Emily Carr, Grade 8: Taylor has achieved Honour Roll and Learning Skills recognition throughout the last two years, setting goals and making them achievements. A member of our concert band, vvolleyball and track and field teams and has shown her leadership in the Readers Advisory Committee, as a Kindergarten helper. Taylor was recently accepted into the White Oaks Secondary School ALP Program. · Emma Coates, Falgarwood, Grade 8: Emma demonstrates outstanding qualities in academics, music, student leadership and community work within our school. An Honours student, and member of our concert band, student council and basketball, Emma enthusiastically volunteers for a number of school events. The ease with which she positively interacts and assists other staff and other students makes Claire Vision To be the most livable town in Canada Lest We George's Square Veterans' Memorial Friday, June 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. George's Square (Trafalgar Road at Palmer Avenue) Oakville, Ontario Forget In honour of the men and women who proudly served our country. The Veterans' Memorial addition at George's Square lists the names of those who served in WWI or WWII, and resided in Oakville at the time of their enlistment. The memorial addition consists of two curved walls at the north and south ends of the existing cenotaph, complimented by new benches and landscaping.
