Parent volunteer sets an example An Oakville parent has won a provincial award for her volunteer work. Lyn Hartman has been awarded the 2010 Ontario Association of Parents for Catholic Education (OAPCE), Parent Volunteer of the Year Award. She received the award from an OAPCE representative at Tuesday's Halton Catholic District School Board meeting. Hartman had been nominated by 14 people. The OAPCE rep said they usually get just three letters of recommendation per nominee. Hartman has been chair of the School Council at St. Marguerite d'Youville Catholic school for five years. She is also a classroom volunteer and a member of the school's Parent Involvement Committee. In her church parish of Mary Mother of God, in Oakville, Hartman is a Youth Alpha/Adult Alpha Leader Administrator, a lector, a children's liturgy volunteer and a Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) sponsor. "She excels in encouraging an atmosphere of co-operation and respect while still being able to focus on results and drive forward with improvements and new initiatives. These attributes are the primary reasons why St. Marguerite d'Youville was able to achieve the Eco Certification gold status, launch the very successful Health and Wellness Committee, and cooperatively create the student Green Club," read a statement from the St. Marguerite d'Youville School Council. "Your resume highlights your degree of commitment ... and the example that you set for all of us," Halton Catholic school board chair and Burlington trustee Bob Van de Vrande told Hartman as she accepted her award.
