Pine Grove runs wild at Gapes meet Pine Grove won five of twelve races -- including all three in the tyke division -- at the Halton District School Board's Gapes junior relay meet, held recently at Burlington's Nelson High School. Pine Grove's wins in the tyke girls', boys' and mixed races earned the school the overall tyke title. The school also shared top honours with Forest Trail in the bantam overall standings after winning the bantam girls' race and placing second in the mixed race. Pine Grove's other race win came in the midget mixed race. Pine Grove was second in the midget girls' race and finished second in the midget overall standings. Gladys Speers and Forest Trails also enjoyed strong showings at the Gapes meet. The Longhorns, who sat out last season to address some off-the-field issues, were blasted 27-0 by the Ottawa Invaders Saturday in Ottawa in the season opener for both teams. Ottawa outgained the Longhorns 287 yards to 74, including a 240-46 advantage in the passing game. Longhorns quarterback Mark Demerling completed eight of 16 passes and was intercepted twice. Stephen Moore had five receptions and Jason Adamko had 37 rushing yards for the Longhorns. The Longhorns, who are playing out of Burlington this year as artificial turf is installed at Bronte Athletic Field, will host the Toronto Maddogs Saturday.
