21 · Wednesday, June 2, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Just a taste Hot Box at Joshua Creek A group of five artists in a professional development program are exhibiting natural sculptures at the Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre. The artists are part of the HotBox Joshua Creek mentorship program, which began this spring, and they will work on the creation of environmentally-friendly and site-specific installations until October. The art works will be displayed outdoors around the centre. The artists will also be available to the community while they work on their artworks. The art is not only meant to be aesthetically pleasing, but it will also focus on the link between ecology and artistic expression using nature as a resource. Another part of the program for the artists is that they will be involved with interactive workshops, arts education conferences, forums and the development of a new work for young audiences. Participating artists include: Rina Grosman, Pat Hertzberg, Robin Hollingdrake, Quan Steele and Grazyna Ziolkowski. The program is directed by Sonja Hidas with project manager Paul Fulton. Hidas created the first HotBox Project in Mississauga to celebrate Mississauga's 30th anniversary of the 1979 train derailment and evacuation of 230,000 citizens. Turkish couple shows worldly art A Turkish-Canadian couple will have their artworks on display in Oakville -- works heavily influenced by their world travels. The watercolour paintings and sculpture work of Asuman and Atanur Dogan will be displayed at CJ's Café in Bronte from now through July 6. The couple met in 1983, while studying fine arts at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. They travelled together through Turkish villages where they nurtured an understanding of the countryside, which now influences their work. Their travels then led them to places such as London, Paris, Zurich, Istanbul, as well as major U.S. and Canadian cities -- further experiences that would influence their work. They are now Turkish and Canadian citizens and have an art gallery in Izmir, Turkey. CJ's is located at 2416 Lakeshore Rd. W. ERIC RIEHL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER AT APPLEBY: Elizabeth Spence votes for her favourite cake at the Oakville Taste event held Sunday at Appleby College. Oakville restaurateurs and caterers teamed up to share food and hope. Food enthusiasts had the chance to sample and pair signature food styles from more than a dozen local restaurants and caterers, along with wine and beer from local producers. The afternoon's taste experience was topped off with a sweet from one of Oakville's bakeries. The net proceeds from the event, which included a silent auction, will be donated to Kerr Street Ministries (KSM), a non-denominational charity that serves 5,000 people a year, providing hope, support and care for children, youths, and low-income families across Oakville.
