No long weekend holiday for police Halton police have been out in force this week as part of the National Road Safety Week campaign that seeks to make Canada's roads the safest in the world. Police said they have strategically chosen this week for the campaign as it is the first summer long-weekend meaning more people on the roads and more frequent traffic accidents. In preparation for this, police vehicles will be stationed at key locations to remind people that safe driving habits save lives and reduce injuries on roadways. Throughout the week police will be focusing on impaired drivers, seatbelt use, aggressive driving and people driving while talking on cell phones or using other communication devices. "Anyone can become a victim of unsafe driving whether by direct involvement or when a loved one is affected," said Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell. "Police agencies across the country are collaborating on this project because they have seen this kind of devastation and because they know that the involvement of the driving public is essential to achieve safer streets and highways." The need for greater safety on Halton's roads is obvious as last year there were nine deaths and more than 1,170 serious injuries in Halton vehicle collisions. Police point out that each number represents considerable pain and heartache for members of the community, which could have been prevented. 5 · Friday, May 21, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Vacations Made You Feel Guilty About Leaving Mom Alone Inside Opinion............................................6 Home and Garden.........................21 Living..............................................28 Artscene.........................................30 Worship..........................................34 Sports.............................................35 Real Estate.....................................40 Classified........................................42 Full Delivery: New Homes, Stone Link, Michael's of Canada, Sears, Partial Delivery: Mississauga Booster, Bad Boy Furniture, Dell Computers, Bluestone Project, Ontario Tourism, Cruisenet, Jan Gelderman, Pharma Plus, Nature's Source, Goway Travel, Wheels, B&H Magazine This year you left, but she's not alone om looks forward to your daily conversations and feels more secure knowing that you're just a phone call away.
