So the 17-year-old Loyola student didn't mind having to wait half an hour after completing her 100-metre race to find out whether or not she won the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championship yesterday (Wednesday) at Burlington's Nelson Stadium. Judges needed to review several different angles of the photo finish between Cadogan and Cathedral student Monique Rodney before determining Cadogan edged out her Hamilton rival at the finish line. Cadogan's win returned her to the top of the GHAC podium for the first time in three years. She was the midget girls' 200m champion as a Grade 9 student in 2007, but tore ligaments in her ankle the following year and spent the next couple seasons working her way back. "It was really hard to start up again and pick it up again," said Cadogan, who completed the 100m race in a personal-best time of 12.72 seconds. "But I love this. I love being the GHAC champion." Later in the day, Cadogan also won the 200m race at the GHAC track-and-field meet, where the top five finishers in each event qualify for the South Region championships. She crossed the line in 26.17 seconds. Devon Bosada of T.A. Blakelock was also a two-event champion yesterday. She won the junior girls' 400m race in 1:00.16 -- a time that was faster than the senior girls' 400m winner posted -- and then claimed the 200m race in 26.63 seconds. Bosada, 16, was sixth in the 400m at OFSAA last year. She's optimistic that she SUBMITTED PHOTO DOWN THE STRETCH: Loyola's Ashara Cadogan (center) outsprints Hamilton Cathedral's Monique Rodney (left) and St.Thomas Aquinas' Lavenia Primpeh down the final stretch of the senior girls' 100-metre dash yesterday (Wednesday) at Burlington's Nelson Stadium. Cadogan won the race while Primpeh finished third. can improve on that showing this season, noting that she's now more focused on running. "I've trained more, I've been working harder and thinking about it more," she said. "Last year, it was just `track'. This year, I'm thinking about it and getting into it more." Bosada also had a chance to qualify for the South Region championships in the high jump, another event she admits she hasn't always given her complete attention to. "Imagine if you actually had technique and you actually tried," Bosada's teammate and best friend, Karley Donnelly, said to her. Donnelly, who was second to Bosada in the 400m, won the 300m hurdles later in the day. Other event winners from yesterday's action, the second and final day of the GHAC meet, included White Oaks' Madison Milner (midget girls' 3,000m), St. Thomas Aquinas' Kelly Hennessy (junior girls' 3,000m), Holy Trinity's Connor Mabbott (senior boys' 400m) and Iroquois Ridge's John Breeson (midget boys' 800m). Yesterday's competition extended past the Beaver's press deadline. Complete results from Day 2 of the GHAC meet will appear in tomorrow's (Friday's) edition of the Beaver.
