Jason Nobili, who coached the Blades to Ontario Hockey Association and Central Canada championships and an appearance in the RBC Cup national junior A hockey tournament this past season, has left Oakville to coach the Central Canadian Hockey League's Toronto Junior Canadiens in 2010-11. Nobili's departure after one year with the Blades was planned all along, according to Oakville general manager Carlo Coccimiglio. Nobili, a former coach in the East Coast Hockey League, is going into his second year of teacher's school and wanted to be closer to his North York home. Under Nobili, the Blades went 46-9-1 in the regular season, then won 16 of 23 games in the Ontario Hockey Association playoffs. Oakville went 4-0 at the Dudley Hewitt Cup in Sault Ste. Marie to win the Central Canadian title before struggling to an 0-4 showing at the RBC Cup in Dauphin, Manitoba. "Jason did a good job for us," said Coccimiglio. "I was pleased how he handled the team. He's a very good communicator. He'll do very well wherever he goes in the game of hockey." GM might go back behind bench Coccimiglio, who stepped down as head coach this past year so he could focus completely on the Blades' move to the new Joshua's Creek Sports Complex for the upcoming season, said he is considering returning behind the Blades bench. The Burlington resident led the Blades to an RBC Cup appearance in 2007-08. "There's a possibility," said Coccimiglio. "There are things still to do in the community that I need to get involved with. We're putting business plans together to see where my efforts should be." If Coccimiglio doesn't assume the coaching duties, he said he'll only consider candidates who have experience coaching teams that play on Olympic-sized ice like the Blades will be doing next year. Determining the next coach is just one of a few things on Coccimiglio's plate this summer. He also needs to replace as many as 11 players from this past season's club who are moving on, many of them bound for NCAA schools. -- Jon Kuiperij Making it look easy Six local winners on Day 1 of GHAC track Six local athletes won their events on Day 1 of the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference track-and-field championships Monday in Hamilton. Holy Trinity's Rachel Bronzovich and Eric Labelle, St. Thomas Aquinas' Kelly Hennessy and Abbey Park's David Watson won their respective divisions in the 1,500-metre running events, Iroquois Ridge's Emmanuel Tayi won the senior boys' long jump and Trinity's Toluwa Fayemi was first in the junior boys' 100m hurdles. Monday's action included hurdles, discus, long jump, the 1,500m run and heats for the 100m and 200m sprints. The meet will conclude today (Wednesday) at Burlington's Nelson High School. Several local runners established themselves in Monday's heats as contenders to win sprint titles today. Loyola's Ashara Cadogan was the fastest in qualifying for the senior girls' 100m dash and second-fastest in 200m heats. Aquinas' Lavinia Prempeh was third in qualifying for both races. Abbey Park's Connor Mabbott is the top qualifier in the senior boys' 200m dash, while Blakelock's Devon Bosada was the fastest in qualifying for the junior girls' 200m. Abbey Park's Brittany Osland was second in junior girls' 100m heats and third in the junior girls' 200m. Top-five finishers at GHAC advance to the South Region championships later this month, where topfour finishers will qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet in London. That's been the junior B lacrosse season so far for the Oakville Buzz, which has alternated two-game winning streaks and losing streaks through the first month of the season. The latest two-game slide came last weekend as the Buzz lost 12-10 to the St. Catharines Spartans Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, then fell 6-5 in overtime Sunday to the Owen Sound North Stars in Owen Sound. Oakville is now 4-4 on the Ontario Lacrosse Association campaign after winning its first two games of the season, losing two in a row and then winning two more before last weekend. Friday, the Buzz and Spartans were tied 4-4 after one period and 9-9 through 40 minutes before St. Catharines scored three of the game's final four goals. Bryan Cole and Dylan Gilbert both had five points for the Buzz Friday. Cole notched a hat trick and added two assists, while Gilbert had two goals and three helpers. Patrick Corbett scored twice, with Brendan Gamble, Tyler Albrecht and Dan Lomas netted singles. Graeme Kirkness and Tyler Sullivan split time in goal. Sunday, Owen Sound outscored the Buzz 2-1 in overtime, netting the eventual winner with 2:01 to go in the extra session. Corbett (two goals, one assist) and Gilbert (one goal, two assists) led the way offensively for Oakville. Lomas and Albrecht had the Buzz's other markers, with Kirkness taking the loss in net. Oakville hopes the early-season trend continues for one more weekend. The Buzz will visit the Hamilton Bengals Friday, then travel to Welland Sunday for a date with the Warlords.
