Oakville-born colonel killed in Afghanistan By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville-born Canadian Forces Colonel was among 18 people killed in Kabul Tuesday morning when a suicide bomber detonated his car bomb beside an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) convoy. Colonel Geoff Parker, 42, of the Royal Canadian Regiment, was in Kabul interacting with various international organizations in order to prepare for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan later this year. He was travelling with the convoy when the blast occurred, killing him along with five American soldiers and 12 Afghan civilians. His death makes him the highest-ranking Canadian soldier to be killed in the war in Afghanistan. At a press conference broadcast from Kandahar Tuesday, Canadian Forces Colonel Simon Hetherington spoke about the type of person Parker was and the unmatched potential he possessed.
