www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 14, 2010 · 30 Festival Quattro nurtures kids at ArtHouse By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Long-time Oakville-resident Don Pangman truly believes children need to be nurtured and for him art is just one of the ways to do it. And he said he's had some success in that regard since he founded the ArtHouse after-school program last September, where some 30 Oakville children have participated classes to learn about various art forms. His art program is free so that all children, no matter what their socio-economic background, can participate and benefit from an arts education. "I wanted to do something that would connect young people who may otherwise not have an opportunity," Pangman said. "A lot of attention is paid in sports today, but I think the arts play an equal role in the human place." ArtHouse uses professional and amateur mentors, who get paid an honorarium for their efforts instructing the seven to 11 year "A lot of attention is paid in sports today, but I think the arts play an equal role in the human place." Don Pangman, ArtHouse founder olds in the program. However, putting on weekly classes and recruiting mentors is not free. ArtHouse, or as it is officially called Arts for Children and Youth in Oakville (ACYO), has received financial support from places such as the Oakville Community Foundation, RBC, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, corporations and individuals. Pangman has a joke that when he walks along the north side of Lakeshore Road in downtown Oakville, people go to the south side to avoid him asking for support. Aside from sponsorship and grants, Pangman has staged a concert series that helps him raise Don Pangman money. This Thursday, April 15 Pangman is staging the fourth Festival Quattro since he began the initiative less than a year ago. This concert will take place at Appleby College's John Bell Chapel. It will feature musicians from the Glenn Gould School in Toronto including harpist Emilie Lom, pianist Claudia Chan, vocalist Taylor Strande and flautist Tim Crouch and his wind chamber group as well as performers from the Canadian Opera Company. "The performers are all outstanding," he said. The show will be of a varied format including classical, jazz and others. There will also be displays of visual arts in the chapel. Currently ArtHouse has Wednesday and Thursday classes with about 15 children in each from Oakwood Public School. The classes include music, theatre and visual art. The mentors on Wednesdays come from Appleby College, and include the school's drama teacher Kip Longstaff, and students. Thursday's music program features instruction from music director Diana Isherwood and musician Tom Cowles. Classes take place at St. Aidan's Anglican Church. Pangman is hopeful his program is changing the lives of the children involved. He said, "Maybe you don't see the results of your work until three or four years from now, but you get an 11 year old kid who's never had an opportunity to be involved in something like this and now he or she is 14 and they've become mentors for the 10 year olds." Pangman is also working towards starting a summer camp this year at Sheridan College, which will include theatre, dance and art. Furthermore, this coming September, there will be new classes at Clearview Christian Reformed Church in partnership with Oakville Galleries. "We're taking baby steps and that's really important," said Pangman. "There are so many people that have supported this that you don't want to make any missteps." ArtHouse recently became a registered charitable organization. The Festival Quattro concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets, available at L'Atelier Grigorian in the Towne Square, cost $25.
