Anchored by goals in the final minute of the first and second periods, and a 27-save performance by netminder Jimmy Sarjeant, the Hurricanes skated to a 4-1 victory over the Oakville Blades Monday night in the second game of the best-of-seven series. The Newmarket win squared the series at one win apiece heading to Game 3 tonight (Wednesday, 8:30 p.m. start) at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Braeden Rigney led the Hurricanes with one goal and an assist while Chad Sumsion, Morgan Bonner and Tyler Sikura struck for the other Newmarket goals. Defenceman Thomas Evans answered for the Blades with a powerplay marker late in the second period to cut a Newmarket lead to 2-1. Few observers at the outset of the series considered the Hurricanes a worthy foe for the Blades based on the differences between their leagues. Newmarket plays in the Central Canadian Hockey League, which does not allow teams to have as many 19- and 20-year-old players as the Ontario Junior A Hockey League. But Newmarket has held its own against the more playoff-hardened Blades. Actually, the Hurricanes were feeling pretty good about themselves after a 4-3 loss Saturday in Game 1 -- despite losing the services of defenceman Julian Melchiori to a shoulder injury early in the first period. "We had the same effort in the first game, just didn't get the results," said Hurricanes' head coach Brian Perrin. "They're good at burying their chances and (Monday) we did a good job at limiting their chances." Rigney agreed, pointing out the Hurricanes have only themselves to satisfy. "It didn't bother us and we don't care what people say about us," said Rigney, who jammed a rebound under Blades' netminder Daniel Savelli with three seconds remaining in the first period to open the scoring. "We know each other in the room. We have no problem being a big underdog. "The loss the other night was the first time we lost and I thought we played a good game this year. After the first period we knew we were good enough. "Teams get frustrated against us. We want it to be tough to play against us." Rigney also drew an assist on Chad Sumsion's goal at 19:16 of the second period. The goal came after an odd flurry of activity around the Oakville net during which Hurricanes shooters blasted two shots off the posts within seconds and just missed another terrific chance. Sumsion then fired from an acute angle along the boards and found space between Savelli and the post. The goal came less than two minutes after Evans sailed a point shot over Sarjeant's shoulder on a screened shot from the right point to nullify a Tyler Sikura goal in the fifth minute of the second period. "Hopefully we can take a gut check and learn from this game," said Evans. "They wanted it more. They were beating us on the puck all night. "Newmarket is a very disciplined team and know their systems very well. We got down two goals, especially in the last minute (of the period) and we can't let that happen." Newmarket lost the services of defenceman Kevin Woodyatt midway through the first period to a recurring injury. He joined blueliners Julian Melchiori (shoulder) and Adam Davies (knee) on the sidelines. But no one on the winning side is using that as an excuse. "This team has been through so much beyond just hockey this season. It just knows how to battle through stuff like that," said Perrin. Newmarket closed out the scoring 6:17 into the third period as Morgan Bonner split the Blades' defence and banked a shot off the goal post. Blades head coach Jason Nobili credited the Newmarket side with full marks for the win. "They deserved to win tonight," said Nobili. "We have to be better and be ready to compete. At this point we're talking about teams that warrant being here by winning their leagues." -- More Blades coverage on page 32 Oakville Blades forward Kyle Badham (in blue) gloves the puck to himself Monday in Newmarket.
