Matt McGregor, 17, was a Grade 12 student at White Oaks Secondary School with a bright future. For his last semester of high school he was engaged in a full-time coop program with the company Johnson Equipment and was working toward an apprenticeship as an industrial electrician. McGregor's life, however, was cut short early Matthew McGregor Saturday morning, when the car he was driving left the road and struck a tree on McCraney Street East, near Kirstie Court. McGregor was pronounced dead at the scene while an 18-year-old passenger was transported to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening head injuries. The Halton Regional Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the accident, but has said the initial evidence suggests that speed may have been a contributing factor. Today, the tree where McGregor's life ended, which lies only a few hundred metres from his high school, is serving as a makeshift memorial to his life. A single candle burns at the tree's base while dozens of flowers and a paper message board hide the torn bark from the accident.
