Appleby rolls into OFSAA quarter-finals As of yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, the Appleby College Blue Dogs seemed a likely candidate to appear in the final of the provincial high school boys' hockey AA championship tournament. Appleby, the top seed in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament in St. Catharines, finished round-robin play with a 4-0 record, outscoring its opposition 25-2. The Blue Dogs were slated to face either Tottenham St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Mary's College yesterday afternoon in a quarter-final contest. Semifinals were scheduled for this morning (Friday), with the championship game set for 6 p.m. The bronzemedal game will be played at 2 p.m. After two routs to open the tournament Tuesday, the Blue Dogs faced tougher competition Wednesday. Appleby blanked Belleville St. Theresa 3-0, led by two goals and an assist from Dan Poliziani and the shutout goaltending of William Cooper. Matthew Rubinoff had the Blue Dogs' other goal. In their other game Wednesday, the Blue Dogs skated past Toronto Community Hebrew Academy by a 5-1 count. Liam Board, Poliziani and Rubinoff all had a goal and two assists, while Mitchell McMullin and Brandon Leard also tallied. Aleksandar Pike picked up the win in goal. Oakville's other representative at the AA OFSAA tournament, the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders, were eliminated from medal contention after splitting their first four games. Aquinas went 1-1 on Tuesday, then whipped Queen Elizabeth Sioux Look 10-1 and were doubled up 6-3 by Unionville Bill Crothers on Wednesday. Rick Bota and Cameron Farrell both had hat tricks versus Queen Elizabeth. Mike Vuocolo had two goals and an assist, Jake Jagodkin had a goal and two helpers, and Brad Gillies had three assists. Zack Ruys notched Aquinas' other goal, with Adam Wirkowski earning the victory. Paterson Farrell, Ruys and Gillies scored against Bill Crothers, but the Raiders were unable to overcome a 30 first-period deficit.
