The bill would prohibit the TransCanada plant's construction as the project, as currently proposed, would be located less than 400 metres away from the nearest residential area. Flynn said the bill simply makes sense as regulations are already in "I can't imagine any member standing up and arguing in favour of locating these plants closer." n Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn place requiring wind turbines to be 550 metres away from residential areas while nothing currently exists to regulate the distance between natural gas power plants and residential areas. "The current process can lead to a natural gas power plant of any size being built within a residential community," said Flynn. "In Oakville, the proposed 900megawatt TransCanada power plant would be one of the largest in Canada and is situated less than 400 metres from the nearest homes and schools." Flynn said the health concerns many residents have about their close proximity to the proposed power plant were only amplified by the recent tragedy in Middletown, Connecticut when an explosion occurred at a 620-megawatt natural gas power plant that was under construction. The blast killed five construction workers. The bill has passed its first reading and will be debated Thursday, April 22, which is Earth Day. "I can't imagine any member standing up and arguing in favour of locating these plants closer (than 1,500 metres)," said Flynn. "I can see someone arguing that perhaps the process needs to be improved, or that the process to date has not gone well, I understand that. I think the Ontario Power Authority has got a lot to learn, but I can't imagine anybody who, based on what we know, would say these plants need to be located any closer to homes, day care centres than the 1,500 metres." Flynn is urging all Oakville residents to come to Queen's Park on Thursday, April 22 to show their public support for the bill. c. Reface You may already own half of your new kitchen!
