www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 19, 2010 · 32 Lang returning to Whitecaps Kara Lang is back with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The long-time member of the Canadian women's national soccer team has signed a one-year deal with the United Soccer League W-League squad, the club announced this week. Lang, 23, last played for the Whitecaps in 2006. The midfielder/striker played three games for the W-League's Pali Kara Lang Blues of Los Angeles last season while attending UCLA. Lang, who tore her right ACL last fall for the second time in her career, will also be relied on by the Whitecaps to help build the women's game in British Columbia. She assumes the newly-created position of Whitecaps Women's Ambassador, designed to increase awareness and growth of women's soccer while building relationships through visits with local clubs, players and coaches. "We're very pleased to have someone of Kara's talent and profile join the club this season," said Whitecaps director of soccer development Dan Lenarduzzi. "As well as being a leader on the field, we're also excited about Kara's role in helping the Whitecaps grow women's soccer in British Columbia." Thanks to her knee injury and the league's restrictions on foreign players, Lang was not selected in the Women's Professional Soccer draft earlier this year. The Aquinas grad played for the Whitecaps from 2003-06. She has also earned 88 senior international caps and scored 33 goals for the Canadian women's team in her career, helping Canada reach the semifinals of the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup and the quarter-finals of the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Lang was the number one college soccer recruit in 2005, when she joined UCLA. In four seasons with the Bruins, Lang recorded 32 goals and 19 assists for 83 points.
