When I handed her the Lotto Max ticket, she noticed I had circled the winning combo in coloured pencil, and started to get excited," said MacDonald. "It wasn't until she scanned it and the machine said, `winner,' that we confirmed I had won the $10-million jackpot." MacDonald said on Tuesday he was in the Toronto office of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation from 10 a.m. to nearly 4 p.m. where he filled out numerous forms, was taken to lunch at the Pickle Barrel, and attend- ed a media conference where he was given a real cheque for $10 million. "They were very kind and phoned the closest branch of my bank and the manager came and got us and took me over and deposited the cheque for me," said MacDonald. While MacDonald didn't do any real celebrating the evening of his lottery win, he said the celebration will come in the form of a European odyssey he plans to take in September. MacDonald also plans to use some of his newfound wealth to renovate his Oakville home. Beyond that MacDonald has no real plans for the money. "I'll have to see what I decide is the best way to invest or save the money unless I wanted to give it all away. I mean, I'm sure there's enough there to last me the rest of my life," laughed MacDonald. MacDonald has lived in Oakville since 1977 where he has enjoyed his retirement from a career in the Treasury department of Canadian Pacific. This job allowed him so see a great deal of Europe including Great Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. MacDonald said he is looking forward to visiting all these places again during his upcoming vacation. Until then, MacDonald said it's largely business as usual. Besides volunteering for the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital Auxiliary, MacDonald is also a volunteer with the Optimist Club of Oakville, a charity which helps community youth. MacDonald said he is currently helping that club prepare for its district convention in August. Although a member of the Optimist Club, MacDonald said he was never greatly optimistic about winning the lottery. "I might be an optimist, but I never thought I'd win it, I always hoped I would, but I never believed I really would."
