Atom red Wolfpack wins Lake Placid title in shootout Will Mackey scored in a shootout and Christian Eyram turned aside the last two shooters as the Oakville atom red Wolfpack edged Potsdam, N.Y. 3-2 to win the American Cup at a tournament in Lake Placid. Oakville's Rick Schutte was named tournament MVP. Playng on the same ice as the U.S. Miracle on Ice in 1980, the Wolfpack avenged their only loss of the tournament, a qualifying-round loss to Potsdam. Potsdam's leading scorer had four goals against the Wolfpack in their previous meeting but in the final Thomas Da Silva did a great job shadowing him, and shutting him down. The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and despite getting its fifth straight powerplay, Potsdam was unable to beat Eyram, sending the game to a shootout. Oakville, the lone Canadian team in its division, scored victories over teams from Connecticut and Vermont to reach the final. Mission accomplished. The Rangers won their division at the SCTA tournament in Owen Sound, posting a 4-0-1 record and qualifying for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championship weekend. Oakville clinched its spot in the OMHA tournament by defeating the Welland Tigers in the semifinal. Previously at the SCTA competition, the Rangers defeated Brampton, Niagara Falls and Guelph while also tying Halton. The Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs were the other SCTA team to qualify for the OMHA tournament, which will be hosted by last year's Ontario Hockey Federation champion YorkSimcoe Express.
